Lead

RE: Lead
Our local shooting club here sold about 3,000 lbs. of range scrap recently from the big indoor range here to the local scrap yard for $0.18/lb. about a month ago. I don't know what pure lead scrap is going for right now, but metal prices are down quite a ways at the moment.

After the Flint, MI blow-up re: lead contamination in the water a lot of cities and towns will likely be forced to replace the old lead water pipes. Shooters and fishermen need to be at the front of the line at scrap yards, when that starts to happen.Idea

RE: Lead
I have been going to the recycle centers and tire shops. The stick on tire weights seem to be pure lead but I sort out any weights that have Fe (Iron) or Zn (Zinc) stamped on them. I test the lead by listening to the thud sound against a big bolt. If it gives a ting sound it could be zinc or iron. I also test the lead with fencing pliers for purity by seeing how easy it is to mar. I also sort the wheel weights by brands and melt them separately.
I melt the Lead in a clean old pot at about 750*F to get more impurities out. At this stage I have used several different things as flux, Beeswax, grease, dry sawdust, and clean catty litter. I have heard of others using hydraulic fluid.
The sticky stuff on the weights put out a lot of smoke. It would be advised to do this outside making ingots.

RE: Lead
I ordered 50 lbs of pure lead from Baco at a 1.90 a pound. I should breath easier next week when it shows up. Thanks for the replies!

RE: Lead
Received my lead from BACO today. My wife wasn't impressed when she picked it up, it might of been a bit heavy for her. She sent me a text with an angry face on it Smile

RE: Lead
Exactly right Bob. It's all I could afford right now. I did cast 40 bullets up with the new lead, good stuff. I'm in panic mode over my lead supply. With the four boys to feed, unrelenting feasting by the way. I'm gonna have to start melting down 45 bullets before I can afford more lead.

I just went to my plumbing supply store. bought three 5 pound ingots of PURE lead. total was $75. ouch....but at least they have it.

I mix a little pure tin and get 20 to 1 or less...
