Bullets for 1/30 twist

Hi Folks-------------my shooting partner just received a vintage HighWall chambered in 45/90----twist appears to be 1 in 30 inches (original 30 inch barrel)

Nice rifle with an original short mast rear aperture sight( no windage adjustment) with a Winchester windage front sight .

Seems an odd combination of chambering for what seems to be a relatively short range sight set ------------

What bullet weight/length is recommended for the 1/30 twist ?

285-300 is how they loaded the original ammo. I have seen some old data from back in the day for 405 gr bullets, but I'm thinking anything over 350 likely to be spray and pray...

Seems so to me as well Caprock
I'll get some pics of the sights as well as the rifle , crescent butt plate.

I might be an inch off on the twist but not much more than that, 520 grain slugs are sideways at 50 steps

A bullet an inch to an inch and a sixteenth long will shoot. A 340 grain Gould hollow point will work, and the Lyman 457122 mold is inexpensive and readily available. Shoot straight, rdnck.

Dave, My old list of ROT shows 32" for the old Winchesters in .45/90 so your measurement of 30" isn't far off. I'd go straight for the Lyman 457191 bullet which was designed for the .45/90. Or, Buffalo Arms and The Bull Shop both have 300 to 325 grain bullets you can buy to give them a try in that rifle. The Winchester .45/90 in either single shots or the repeating '86 was an express cartridge, featuring high velocity for short ranges, and not a long range cartridge. Shoot sharp, Mike

thanks for the info i'll round up a mold and see what i can do about getting it shooting !!!

Its an interesting rifle and i'm still wondering about it intended use-----ought to make a heck of a hunting rig
