July Match at Smithmoor

Fellow Shooters,

We had a rainy day today and I got a break in the farm work to work on the match write-up from Saturday's big bore silhouette match at Smithmoor Range. We had an excellent and very enjoyable day with 11 riflemen making it out to shoot. There were some switchy winds that kept things interesting along with a mirage that seemed to like to lie to us. We will keep working on trying to figure them out. The range is proving to be deceivingly easy as the scores have yet to be very high. The target visibility is excellent with the black targets really sticking out against the light colored berms.

I managed a 26 to be the high score of the day with Michael Rix close at my heels with 25. Jack Odor was trying out a different rifle that didn't work out so well. Other interesting events included Ceph Jones shooting his 38-55 and ringing multiple animals, and Dave Clark being high chicken shooter with 3 chickens. I have heard 38-55 was very marginal on silhouette, and it looks like that is correct. Dave has really been working hard on trying to improve and it is fun to see him have some success. Kevin Finney is also steadily improving and I have no doubt he will be a contender before long. I was glad to see Lee Wolff make it up from Colorado for the first time as well as we had Steve and Greg shooting silhouette for the first time. Thank you all for coming to shoot!

A big thanks to my folks Gary and Lorraine Smith for the morning coffee cake and tea as well as the super burgers and watermelon they served for lunch. Also a big thank you to them for all the money and work they have put into our new range.

Good turn out. Looking forward to the 15th. Probably going to run the CSA 75, need to get some rudimentary sight settings for the Utah state match for the scope.
