I use a leather slip-on recoil pad on my rifles and I have never had a problem with the recoil on any BPCR I shoot. 45-70 is the lightest I have. I asked the NRA rules guy if it was legal to use in matches and he said 'yes' so I shoot whatever caliber I want to without regard to recoil. You can always load lighter but the case only holds so much if you want a little more. I have a friend with a 50-140 and that is pretty rough I'll admit. I am currently using 80 grains of Swiss in my 45-100 loads with a 545 gr Postell bullet. Carmen told me this Axtell likes bullets near that weight and she was right - of course. The barrel on this one was built by her own barrel maker early on before they went to Badger barrels. I never could find out who engraved it though. You are right to be excited about your 1877 - one sweet rifle! And Shiloh will do a fine job on it.
