Indian head penny front sight

    My first attempt at a Indian head penny front sight. I used the silver blade from the Shiloh rifles as a pattern.The penny not having the length of the silver blade the angles are correct I left enough height to file and polish after being mounted. My Shiloh 40-70 SS has the ladder sight. With Don having some fun with his I thought I might give some serious work with mine.

Have fun with that ladder sight Randy. You may find that opening the rear sight notch helps a good deal.

If I had a 50-90 Sharps, it'd have a indian-head front-sight on it.

Don when you say to open up the notch are you saying to widen the V or make the bottom a little flatter ?

I'm holding in my hand a front sight taken (temporarily) from my original 1876 Winchester 45 60 Centennial lever action rifle.
It has the Winchester base and the front sight blade is from an old coin . It's not copper, and not quite nickel, gold????
I've never had it tested,and should. It was hand fashioned, and well done. When I took it to the range. it printed
2 inches, center, at 100 yards. These guns could shoot. 63 2f and the Gould hollow point it originally used.
SO. your front coin sight is authentic. (it will go back on the gun if I ever sell it....)

Randy, I don't have a ladder sight, but rather a full buckhorn sight. For me the widening of the rear sight really improved the visibility of the front sight in the rear sight and reduced windage errors for lack of good visibility. I used an old distributor point file w/ a neutral edge. This widened the slot w/o making the slot deeper that can introduce a vertical problem. Hope this helps.
