I can show you a recovered hollow point bullet that passed through a 238# field dressed Michigan UP buck that passed through the shoulder hitting a lot of heavy bone. That is the only bullet I ever found shooting game with the Sharps.
I was using the .50-2.5 and misjudged the range and got him a little high. When that bullet hit he flew sideways and never twitched.
The alloy I think was 1/30, not sure anymore and the bullet weight 685 gr. the HP is .250" deep.
I found that bullet in the snow about 60-70 yards past the deer using a metal detector.
Damage has heavy. I would use that bullet on porkers.

Kurt thats just awesome performance from that bullet, or for any bullet for that matter. Are you guys making the hollow points with your lathes? Are you using custom collets to hold your bullets?
Dave, I would have never thought of pairing a 74 sharps up with a 1911, but in my book, both are excellent choices.
As to the hogs in the thickets, unless you really really want the pig back, well buzzards and other critters need to eat also. But being the good and responsible sportsmen that we are, we don't let animals suffer and escape if at all possible.

Hi Klaus:

I'm trying to get the quickest possible killing shot-----if you can see the thicket behind the deer in the video, these thickets cover hundreds of acres, deer run through them----people can't hardly crawl through them. The quicker i can anchor the critter the more sure i am of recovery----so far its working just fine, 5 hogs and 2 deer have fallen to this bullet, the most any traveled was 20 yards.

All of the bullets so far have been complete pass thru's so i have no recovered slugs to see the physical performance of the bullet-----------i'm happy with the results

Has you got much more meat damage as for the normal Roundnose or Flathead Bullet. it looks like this on the deer.

have you ever use this HP on Critter greater than Deer/ Hog?

Morning Sam:

These are the tools i use in "hollow pointing" creedmore PP bullets.









I made the holding fixture at the shop, bored in the lather to a 0.0005 interference fit to the bullet

I do the hollow pointing in my workshop at the house, its a bit of "fiddling" to get on center but when ya got it ya got it-----save a 30 minute trip to the shop to use a mill

I use the 3/8 center cutting end mill to create the meplat then switch to a drill ----use lots of oil lead pushes ahead of the tool easy and gets sticky if you don't.

I've collected hogs up to 400 pounds----none that big recently, the one Craig shot with the AR was 63 inches long nose to nuts

I spent some time over the years in Cologne-----used to go to the S.P.O.G.A. show ----stayed on the river across from the cathedral----nice city for sure

A little damage meat is the price payed for good bullet performance----shootem in the right place and its not a problem

That HP bullet was cast from a Brooks mould. I had Steve make that mould just like the solid nose bullet he made using the same dimensions. The idea behind it was not for a hunting bullet but to lighten up a 720 gr to a 680 gr and still keep the same external dimensions and I wanted to shift the balance point to the rear.

That is a fine jig!! for a drill press or mill. Good work making it.

I like to use a center drill and my lathe with a collet for making a HP. There are several choices of pilots for making a cavity.
A Gov. bullet makes a very good expanding bullet with a HP cut in it.

Nice hunt Dave! I like your hollow point jig. I might have to build one. Where I hunt in Wyoming it's open for miles so dropping an animal in under twenty yards isn't an issue but it sure would be fun to see what kind of damage a hollow point would do. What's a big deer weigh down there? That spike doesn't look like it would make a 100 pounds.

Hi Stephen:
A big Texas whitetail tips the scales at #150, your spot on. The spike was #93 about 2/3 grown we "manage out" any spikes over 2 years
The ranch has some 160+ deer that we manage for, low hunting pressure and good feed make for pretty critters
I can't say for sure that a hollow point is that much better than an adequate Meplat it"seems" more effective so far--------on hogs it is more effective !!! I have shot several that were DRT, pigs are more "dense"than deer and the HP is more effective on them,i still haven't recovered a slug ?
