RE: Range time
Thats what I saw too. On another note was taking a good look down the bore and saw some decent pitting on the lands 2" from the muzzle and some more the first several inches in front of the chamber. Dont know how I missed those before maybe they were full of lead and I finally got it cleaned out Sad I will keep playing with it and see how it goes. I dont want to but was looking at some barrels at green mountain as a back up route if a cant get her shooting.

RE: Range time
Oregon Barrel will build you a barrel to the exact same outside measurements. That would save having to redo the forearm wood.

JR

Wheel weights are rich in antimony and tin. If you look at the picture the center bullet is a mix of 50/50 lead/WW. The engraving of the lands are just about like the 1/16 tin lead bullet. I shoot a lot of 50/50 mix bullets and some 40% WW to 60% lead and I get along with them just fine.
When I cast the bullets using WW in the mix I cast at a very low heat, between 600 and 620 degrees or at a point when I cut the sprue and look at the bottom side of the sprue puddle and if I see frosting that looks like galvanized tin I turn the heat down more. What that frosting is the antimony and tin that surfaces when the alloy gets to hot and that is what leads the bore if your shooting a GG bullet.
Tin and antimony is the major cause of lead sticking to the bore, not the lead.

RE: Range time
Great explanation Kurt thank you. I usually shoot pure lead with no issues as it is what I have on hand and I am not supper confident in my abilities to mix a consistent alloy. For sure this rifle doesn't like WW's at least not the way these were cast (very frosted). Think I will order a few pounds of 30/1 to see how she likes it. I am also looking at the Saeco 881 in .460 to better match the chamber may have to give Accurate a call to see if he can make a similar mold as his price is a bit better. I want to get this rifle to shoot with out modification. So far having a lot of fun tinkering with it half the fun for me is playing with components the other half is actual trigger time.

Thanks for the link Don. I will give it a look and see whats out there.

RE: Range time
My range time was el stinko today.
We have a Silhouette match coming up this weekend and I wanted to use the .45-70 because it will make weight but I havent shoot it enough with the OE powder and bullet I wanted to use so I loaded some ladder loads and went to the range to shoot the 200 yards.
Had a cold head wind 12 mph plus at 34-5 degrees and the best I came up with was a 7" 5 shot group. Went home after 10 shots.
Hard seeing apertures through tears.

RE: Range time
Yeah that doesnt sound like a good time at all. I wont be back to the range for about a month got work out of town I have to go deal with. By the time I get back the weather will be nice and the bugs will be out. Perfect conditions to burn powder.

RE: Range time
No snow here...Exclamation About 85 F. with no shoots I can get to until the end of next month Sad That reminds me...I'd better get some casting done while I'm not shooting. Have some new moulds on the way and hoping to try them before June. My last range effort in February showed some practice was much needed. Confused
