What is the status of the Pedersoli highwall rifle? Did they ever become "available" to the shooting public in 38.44 or 45 calibers? Their webpage shows some mighty fine examples, but all the "dealers" listed tell me they haven't had any to sell. Or am I just missing something?

Cabela's has had a couple in the past, but I don't think the thing was a real great seller, and didn't last long.

I have one in 47-70, and I won a 38-55 at medicine rock shoot last year. Both shoot very well, the set trigger is a little different and takes a little work to get set just right, still working on fine tuning a load for the 38-55 but it shows real promise. I got the 45-70 from cabelas but haven't seen any there since.

Also, on the Winchester.com website, they offer a 1885 highwall rifle (nice), in several smokeless calibers. Do you think this item be heavy-duty enough to be rebarreled to a BP caliber? I haven't seen one of these yet.

I think the browning would be the same thing and they come in the bp cal. One thing I do like on the pedersoli over the browning is when you close the action the pedersoli goes to half cock and the browning is full cock.

Jim if you look around there are some of the round barreled "sporting" model Winchester 1885's, and they are chambered in 38-55.40-65 and 45-70. They were limited production Shot Show rifles last year. Price on them is pretty reasonable.

Jim, I once thought about rebarreling a Miroku made Traditional Hunter 1885. I ended up selling the rifle as it was far easier/cheaper to sell the rifle and buy a good used Browning BPCR than to rebarrel the rifle. The non-bpcr 1885's are a little different as they have an ejector rather than an extractor ( which you can disable ). You'd also have to get a new forearm, assuming that you were going with a heavier barrel.
The rifles are very strong. I used to own one chambered in .270 and I was a tack driver.
