Ideas for a range box - Willy - 06-02-2012
Hi Folks,
I'm about to design and build a wooden range box and I'm looking for ideas and pictures.
Here's what I've come up with. The box will be a two piece box, the bottom part about 24x10x14 (dimensions subject to change) will have two compartments. The bottom compartment which will have a hinged drop down door on the long side and will be lined with foam and house my scope. This should leave the top compartment about 8" deep (again, still playing with dimensions) with an open top. The top edge of the box will be rabbeted to accept the second part of the box which will form the cover for the bottom compartment...secured in place by 4 brass catches. This top box will be a shallow box with a hinged top cover and multiple compartments...designed for small items. The carrying handle will be affixed to this top box. Cradles for the rifle will be like those from most ranges boxes I've seen and attach to the larger bottom box at the ends.
Construction will be cherry and joints will be box joints unless I feel ambitious enough to cut dovetails.
Thoughts and ideas?

One of my Dads passions other then blackpowder rifles is wood working! He dovetailed and planed all the wood on it! Glad you guys liked it! BTW those were 44/77 pp rounds! I have a bunch loaded because I haven't had time to shoot it!

I planed down some cherry to 1/2" so I might start construction this weekend. I started a blog for this in my web page to log my progress.
