Duplex - Semtav - 04-11-2013
Now Rick, Don, Kurt Et Al. I already read all your posts on other Duplex threads so I already know your view on the subject. So.............
Showed up at work (long way from home) night before last and realized I forgot to bring my New Batch of Swiss Powder and some of my reloading supplies.
So I'm sitting around with not much to do since the weather isn't cooperative and taking stock of what I do have. A little Unique and a little old Batch of Swiss.
Got me to thinking, I've done enough reading on the subject, I just as well try out a few loads. So I made up two 3 shell batches. 85 gr Swiss and 3 gr Unique on top and 80 gr Swiss and 3 gr Unique on top. (mdeland style)
Whole purpose of my testing is to see if it alleviates the fouling control problems.
Groups were shot at 34 deg and 37 deg respectively. about 1 hr apart.
No blow tubing or wiping.
Neither batch showed any improvement over straight black. I still had to cam the second shell in pretty hard.
My missing supplies showed up yesterday so I'm back to straight black, but planning my next duplex move. switching to Unique on bottom will be the next test to see if it changes the fouling. Then switch powders and rates.

Here is my take on duplex. I have an original 1881 Marlin with a less than steller barrel. I tried several BP loads, several lubes, blow tube between shots, wipe between shots, none were that useable for target work. I then (out of desperation) tried a duplex load. 10% 4759 that worked very well. So my take is don't rule out duplex. It may just have it's place.

I have spoke with BP shooters that have used duplex-loads for years in high quality Sharps rifles. They would not go back to straight BP!. No wiping, no blow-tubes, easy clean-ups (they say)!
Do you subtract 10% from the main BP charge for your smokless powder wt.? or is there more to it than that?

Brownie is spot on with the 4759, altho you can use around 6grs unique, just don't go over 10% of the total powder charge with any smokeless, and don't compress any of it.It will shoot very clean, and give velocity that makes blackhorn look like talcum powder with a fizz...

They are dirtier than the 90gr Swiss 1.5 I shot today.
When the jag came out the end of the barrel a lot of fine dust went flying.

Unique on top??????? Maybe I read you wrong but the smokeless goes in first...on the bottom before the BP.

I subtrack 10% of the black powder load then add 10% 4759. I never use more than 10% smokeless.

Good catch, but you didn't read me wrong.
