40 caliber bullets - JKR - 12-10-2023
I recently bought a nicely done roller in 40-82 silhouette. I bought it mainly for a platform on which to build a long range rifle. I have a 45 caliber Badger barrel waiting. However, I’m curious enough to want to give the 40 a try.
Does anyone have any 40 cal grease groove bullets that I can buy? Looking for about 50.

I just checked and I have one tray of 50 .40 cal GG. I have not shot any GG for ages except the 25 .38 caliber GG that Arnie gave me for testing in the CPA.
You can have these but I have no idea what the alloy I used for these. They are 400 grainers 1.375 long snovers.
I would say that they are at least 1/20 alloy maybe my no lead solder/lead 1/18

The guy I bought it from had success with the 740 bullet. It would be fun to try a few if you have some to spare.
It strikes me as a good cartridge for a groove size PP bullet. Lots of room to deep seat the bullet.

Jim it doesn't look like I have any of those bullets on the shelf.
My 40-70 didn't care much for it but I think that was due to the twist in the barrel.
Jim Dorrel in Arizona shot a 40-82 at the match in Phoenix last year, he had some trouble with it, but he traced that to a fireformed vs non fireformed cases, and once he got that sort out he did pretty well with it. Not sure what bullet he was shooting but I do know it was a greaser.

Thanks for checking, Don. Kurt is sending me some that he has. That may be enough for me to decide to keep it or have it re barreled. Ray Hanson sent me some 390 grainers from a BACO mold which I’ve shot without any remarkable success. This may be one of those cantankerous cartridges. I honestly doubt that I’ll fall in love with it. I do like the rest of the rifle though!

Jim,
Do a 5 shot ladder load starting at zero compression and work up by one grain.
Usually 5 loads will show the best load the you can refine.
Do one test with LR primers and the next with LP primers.
I boxed up 50 GG and 50 with diapers
as well as some wads. I didn't know if you had .40 caliber wads or not.I don't use any lube with the PP but this is up to you if you do or not. I don't see a pulse using lube except for the hunting loads.
I cant get to town today but I will get it on the way.

Jim I think the 40-82 is like the 40-70 , picky bugger, but once you find what it likes it works well, so long as you don't change anything.

Jim I have a groove dia bullet and a dual dia bullet.you are welcome to try. the dual dia shot real well in my 13.5 twist borchardt.
Ive also got a brooks gg money bullet that really shot well my 16 twist badger barrel.
I could send you a little care package if you'd like.
