Front sight adjustment. - Tgc - 04-16-2022
Gentlemen. I managed to actually go shooting shooting a couple of weeks back. I was shooting my CPA 45 70. The bullet impacts were to the left, 2.375" at 100 yards. The mild breeze was left to right. I had the rear sight at '0' windage. To move the bullet impact to the right, I need to move the front sight to the left. The target distance was 100 yards, or 3600 inches. My sight radius is 33". I divided 3600" ÷33" =109.09. 2.375" ÷109.09=.02177. I moved the front sight .022 to the left. Is my thinking correct? Or will I get a big surprise next time I shoot? Thanks. Tim

Yes you always move the front sight the opposite direction you want the bullet to go.
How much? Your math might be right and it might be bit off , only one way to tell and that's go shoot and try.

It just depends on your furthest distance shooting silhouette an inch or less should suffice
If you are looking for long range then if you can wrangle a 6 ft piece of cardboard then mark the vertices center line and put you target at the bottom of the target take a piece of 2 inch masking tape and run it up the left edge of the center line
With the target set at 100 yards put your 800 yard setting on and aim at the target . Adjust your no wind zero so the group is centered on the left edge of the tape
That will get you about as close as you can get in practical terms

Your numbers seem to be pretty close to what I came up with. The closer you can get to a mechanical zero the better you will be farther out. Once you have that mechanical Zero set you should be good. Even with a front sight set way out to one side it will still be good for long range. I had one where the front was sticking way out to one side and it worked just fine. Eventually I did find out why it had to be so far out and have since fixed the problem.
