Color Case Hardening - Aviator - 01-03-2022 Wondering if any one has had any first or second hand experience (either good or bad) with having parts color case hardened by Howell Arms of Janesville Wisconsin? https://www.howellarms.com/barrel-lining/color-case-hardening Or, if you have a recommendation for getting a few 1885 parts done, with a few weeks lead time? (breech blocks, hammers, levers, for 2 new rifles) I really want to avoid getting into a months or years wait..... RE: Color Case Hardening - DirtySteve - 01-03-2022 No experience with them I know Turnbull Restorations is top notch.. That is not to say the company you list would not do a great job as well.. RE: Color Case Hardening - Don McDowell - 01-03-2022 The way color case guys have been retiring going out of business as of late, I don't know if you'll find any body that can give you a quick turn around. RE: Color Case Hardening - Kurt - 01-04-2022 I just picked up my DZ Hepburn and the Case color is spectacular on this rifle. I don't remember the name but it was done in Wyoming. RE: Color Case Hardening - Don McDowell - 01-04-2022 Probably Wyoming armory in Cody RE: Color Case Hardening - Aviator - 01-04-2022 A few responses for request for quote have trickled in. This afternoon I packaged the parts and sent them off to Allen Springer at Snowy Mountain Blue in Montana. http://smbgunrestorations.com/ I'll let you know how it goes. By the way, the few quotes I got ranged from $100 to $500, with lead times ranging from 2 weeks to 8 months. RE: Color Case Hardening - Don McDowell - 01-04-2022 Show us the pictures when you get the parts back. RE: Color Case Hardening - knobsmt - 01-04-2022 snowy mountian blue did great job on my action RE: Color Case Hardening - DirtySteve - 01-05-2022 What did Snowy Mountain quote you on price and turn around..? RE: Color Case Hardening - Michael Johnson - 01-07-2022 Steve, I have no experience with the outfit in Janesville but do highly recommend Wyoming Armory in Cody, WY. They did an outstanding job on my 40-65 1885 Hiwall built on an original action. I also have an original 1892 Winchester 32-20 with close coupled double set triggers that I am considering sending to them for refurbishment. - Mike Johnson, Seabeck, WA |
