Hollow base mould makers - Steveu - 02-04-2020

All,

Are there any mould makers that make hollow base rifle moulds? I have been reading about on the 43 Spanish and it seem that the best GG bullets were from Remington and they were hollow based. The Lyman mould looks like a good copy of the original bullet, but it has a flat base. I am not interested in PP bullets.
Cheers,
Steve

Brooks will make a hollow base mould.
Casting those hollow bases are a pain in the butt, the hollow base plug acts like a heat sink, and getting a good even fill out is hard, and results in a good percentage of rejects with just a visual inspection.

I cast minie bullets for competition and they have a rather large hollow base. The technique is different from regular bullets. The key to casting hollow base well is to keep the lead and mold hot. I cast minies at 850+. Keep the mold hot, pour fast, keep the alloy hot. When I cast minies, I eat the pot stabilize at 850+, then I pre heat the mold making with a propane torch making sure to get the base pin hot, the start casting. My reject rate is usually the the first two or three and again just after recharging the pot.

Steve,

When you say hollow based do you mean like a mini?
I see a lot of posts with them saying hollow based and they are referring to the cup based calling them hollow base. There is a difference.

Most of the old calibers from the late 1800 rds, used the cup and dish based bullets to tuck in the twisted tailed PP into the cup or dished base bullets.
But you might give Steve Brooks a call he can make you one either way cup or hollow.

Or call Lyman they used to make hollow based moulds. I have some from them.
