Is 28" bbl too short? - Old Jim - 09-04-2019 Is a 28" bpcr in 45-70 too short for target use, out to 800-1000 yds.? Inquiring (OLD) minds, HA HA! Jim RE: Is 28" bbl too short? - Don McDowell - 09-04-2019 No it's not to short. But it's about as short as I would want to use. RE: Is 28" bbl too short? - Hiwall55 - 09-04-2019 I had a 28 inch 44-70 with a 17 twist that shot lights out to 600,never went out any further but I think it would do OK. RE: Is 28" bbl too short? - rdnck - 09-04-2019 What Don said. The sight radius on a 28 inch barrel does make the elevation adjustments a lot more sensitive, though. In my experience, 30 inches is best all around. Shoot straight, rdnck. RE: Is 28" bbl too short? - pacecars - 09-05-2019 It sure makes a great hunting length though! I have not tried it but if you scope it I don’t think it would matter as much. I could be wrong though and I will always defer to the much more experienced shooters on here like rdnck, Don and Kenny RE: Is 28" bbl too short? - Lumpy Grits - 09-05-2019 You'll be fine. Gary RE: Is 28" bbl too short? - MikeT - 09-06-2019 (09-04-2019, 09:29 AM)Old Jim Wrote: Is a 28" bpcr in 45-70 too short for target use, out to 800-1000 yds.? Jim, be good to your old eyes and put a scope on your 28" barreled rifle. Then the sight radius is not an issue. Keep on hav'n fun! MikeT RE: Is 28" bbl too short? - Kurt - 09-06-2019 That's just what I'm doing Mike. I'm finding out with a short DZ scope the short barrels have the advantage not seeing the muzzle shadow like you do with the long barrels.
RE: Is 28" bbl too short? - Old Jim - 09-07-2019 Thanks for the replys everybody. Just askin' for an old friend ![]() ![]() ![]() !
RE: Is 28" bbl too short? - Kurt - 09-07-2019 Jim I have a 73 22" trapdoor carbine and a 32" 73 rifle. Both will hit the 800 yard Buff at the Q. The only thing I see different is the big orange ball of fire with the 22" barrel.
