.45-70 mould recommendation? - Hanz - 02-20-2018 Looking for recommendations for a grease groove bullet mould for my Shiloh Sharps 1874 .45-70. It's a long range express with a 34" barrel. I'd like to use the rifle for BPCR silhouette and long range target. What are your favorites? RE: .45-70 mould recommendation? - Don McDowell - 02-20-2018 The saeco 645 cast from 20-1 is a good bullet in the 45-70. Both the .458 diameter 525 gr and 535 gr money bullets cast from 16-1 are good in the 45-70. Last but certainly not least is the Lyman 457132 cast from 20-1. I also like the Rcbs 82084 bullet cast from 20-1, but it's not particularly good past 800 yards due to it only having 3 lube grooves I think those cause to much drag on the bullet when going past 800. RE: .45-70 mould recommendation? - rdnck - 02-21-2018 The saeco 645 is very accurate in my Shiloh 45-70, and it is a proven 1000 yard bullet. However, it is the only bullet that has ever leaded the barrel in that rifle, and it leads every time I use it. The old standby tried and true 457132 Lyman Postell out of a Lyman mold works and works well out of any rifle I have tried it in, and shoots for me with any barrel twist from 1-18 to 1-22. It is definitely worth a look. Shoot straight, rdnck. RE: .45-70 mould recommendation? - Hanz - 02-21-2018 Thank you gentlemen. I'll buy some cast bullets, both Saeco 645 and Lyman 457132, from Buffalo Arms and work up some loads. Then I'll buy a mould for whatever flies the best. RE: .45-70 mould recommendation? - SgtDog0311 - 02-23-2018 I was trying to find some cast bullet sources yesterday for a friend who does not cast. Had thought BACo sold them but I couldn't burrow down to any selection at all. Wonder what I'm doing wrong. RE: .45-70 mould recommendation? - Hanz - 02-23-2018 Try this link: .45 Caliber lead bullets at BACO I find their website works better for me using Chrome browser instead of Safari. Does that help? |
