primer backing out - ken s - 11-03-2016
minor problem with my original 40 70 SS 74 sporting rifle.
some of the time the lever has to be pushed harder to open and eject the shell. no problem. but I've noticed the primer has a 'sliding' mark on it. so it's backing out a little, and the breach has to ride over it. . I'm using MAG LR primers.
my 50 70 gvt. carbine does not do this.
Is one primer better and tighter than another?
I've just read that the old timers just used to cock the hammer and
dry fire it to push the primer back in. 1929 article.
And of course I put the hammer on safety before opening it every time. I even have a small spring in the breach to make sure the firing pin is back.

Over time and many rounds fired, the face of the block may develop a little recessed area around the firing-pin hole. Not saying that's what has happened to your rifle, as not all rifles will wear in this manner. Other wearing problems may be taking place at the same time.

If the hammer spring gets weak, or if the firing pin hole gets washed out that can happen. Simple enough to cock the hammer and drop it and then open the breech block, the primer should be set back into place. But getting a gunsmith to look at the firing pin, and hole in the breechblock is the next step in a permanent fix.

The latest....They were backing out a little using 65 1 1/2 Swiss and a 390 bullet. and a regular LR primer
I went to the 330 bullet for the 40 70 SS, (the original) and the MAG primers and no back out.
This is a more accurate bullet for 100 yds and more original in my 74
original Sharps anyway.
I wonder if the MAG primers are tighter in the case?
