I took my Wife Hunting - Kurt - 10-07-2016 I'm not good putting my memoirs in words so I will just show pictures. I only had two hunts with Rick at the Sand hills. One year I had to bow out because of health issues. Every one of the hunts were topnotch Plus a couple of us have met on his Ranch just to shoot his Quigley targets that are just like the Quigley targets and distances as well as a long shot out to 1580 yards. Just a fun get together with a couple friends and just shoot for a few days. On this hunt my wife Carolyn wanted to go along and Rick said bring her Rick has a real nice A frame his clients stayed in with all the comforts of home and Ricks Wife Doris prepared the three meals each day plus come out with the Blazer and trailer to pick up the downed animal to haul to the locker. I don't know how she did all this plus her business she kept up with. On the morning of the hunt I told Carolyn to work the camera and stay quiet and stay behind me when we are stalking. Well she stayed close LOL I had to motion for her to not get to close LOL. It was a damp morning and we made a stalk behind the dunes and before we saw them I could smell them and Carolyn whispered I hear them grunting and it sounds like they are moving at out left pretty close Rick motioned to stop and come on up. When I saw them they where close maybe around 75 yards and they spotted us. They bunched up and the cows where grunting and old Brutus was staring at us and started shaking his head. Really to close for a shot I thought. ![]() Well I could not get a clear shot and they moved off on a trot. Made another stalk......darned sand burrs you don't crawl on your belly to get a better look ![]() ![]() I finally got the got one in the open and Rick said I have him at 158 yards and I took it hitting him just above the heart through the lung. The .44-77 made a clean pass through but he did not go down and I made a second shot with him on a run and that shot was three fingers with from the first shot and that put him down after a short run. ![]() Here are some of Ricks Animals. ![]() This is Brutus. Fine animal. ![]() This young Meat bull dressed out with 465 lbs of boned out meat. On our way home Carol said I'm glad that I came with you for this hunt, but I will say it made my hair stand on end when we where close and that bull was swinging his head side to side. She did well except when the action started she forgot about the camera LOL
RE: I took my Wife Hunting - Don McDowell - 10-07-2016 Fun times. RE: I took my Wife Hunting - Mike - 10-07-2016 Kurt, Good pictures. I still wish you'd give me that story. Shoot sharp, Mike RE: I took my Wife Hunting - Kurt - 10-07-2016 Mike I'm not a writer. But if you can make something out of this your welcome to it. RE: I took my Wife Hunting - Stephen Borud - 10-07-2016 Very nice Kurt. I really need to kill a buffalo! The boys would love the meat. Stephen RE: I took my Wife Hunting - Kurt - 10-07-2016 Stephen we haven't had Beef for several years except when we are on the road in the gypsy wagon and stop at a fast food place. Carolyn has a way of making a German pot roasts that fall apart when you lift it with a fork, no knife needed. She uses a couple cans of beer, mushrooms and a bunch of other good stuff and lets it slow cook in the crock pot either over night or all day. This is good with any Venison like cuts from the hind or front quarter or rump roast off the Buff or Beef. really like it with deer meat. If you go for a Buff try to find one in Nebraska. The grass in Neb. makes a better tasting meat. I can tell the difference between the North Dakota and Nebraska Buffalo. Never got one from Wyoming so cant say about it. RE: I took my Wife Hunting - bruce moulds - 10-08-2016 kurt, as we say in the mighty land down under. "not bad for a young bloke." keep safe, bruce. RE: I took my Wife Hunting - Rowdy Rick - 10-08-2016 Kurt Great job on this! Caroline did a great job, held her composure well! We have had some people here who were shaking pretty good when we got not even that close to the old bull ![]() I believe that was the first and only .44-77 that was used here and it did a fine job. A great historical buffalo rifle just as you had it set up. Rick RE: I took my Wife Hunting - Kurt - 10-08-2016 Thank you Rick that rifle is my favorite of all the cartridge rifles I have. I would not change a thing if for some reason I had to have another one build. Single trigger, crescent butplate and light weight barrel and great caliber. The last hunt with you I had some concerns after the three shots that went through the boiler room and he stayed on his feet and needing one behind the ear to finish him to lessen his pain quickly. The bullets where a little to hard after looking at the exit holes. Three days ago I pealed the dry hide off the last hunt and that shot behind his ear and the exit took the whole top of the scull loose and knocked the horn off the far side. It went through a lot of bone. There is no doubt that the .44-77 lacked anything for the hunts. Last night when I posted this Carol saw this post and I saw her get misty eyed, I asked her what's the matter and she said I'm glad I did this with you.
