Hi Gents,
i read in Pauls Book : Black Powder, Pig Lead and SS that he got some successfull experience with cast bullets he sized down to .455.
My actual 457125 Mould just drops out .448 Nose Diameter and .457 over all groves. I ran them through a .457 sizer and lube with Emmerts.
Have you got made some expriences with undersized Bullets in your Rifles?

If you have a good tight chamber and a smooth bore without a lot of chatter marks etc in the rifling those smaller bullets will shoot pretty decent, if they don't fill the throat full of lead to start with.

Even with under-sized lead bullets, the fired bullet can expand into the rifling to form a complete seal against gas-cutting. I use (.458 sized) 20:1 alloy and almost never find any lead slivers in the 45/70 Shiloh.

My goodness-----------try one or two Klaus----------watch the leading you'll know quickly
Don correct me if i'm out of line------but leading and smaller than "normal" diameter grease groove bullets seems a function of chamber diameter --------considering normal is say 0.001 to 0.002 over groove diameter
smaller chamber = less case expansion at the mouth of the case and so less likely to let gas by and lead the throat
I ran a test on my shiloh and when i got to near groove diameter lead started to show up.

Dave I think that's about right. If you have a tight chamber then you can get away with the smaller bullets. That's how the original Sharps were.

Klaus, up your lead temp. and see if that fattens up the bullet some.

I have got another question about the Goverment Style Bullet
Have you any experiences with other kind of Bulletmoulds like Saeco or Rapine or any other wich cast the RN 500 - 520 grs Bullets?

saeco makes the 1881 govt bullet and you can get it in two different sizes , it will throw a bullet right in the weight range you are looking at.
