Favorite 44-40 bullet? - Don McDowell - 06-15-2016

Okydoky, just found one of the new Winchester 73 short rifles in 44-40. Got a couple boxes of factory ammo coming, and a set of Redding dies on the way, will send in a certificate we got for starline brass.
Now for the big question what is your favored 44 wcf bullet?

Don, this may or may not become a very interesting thread. I use the Lyman mold for the original bullet. 42798 is the mold number, a nominal 205 gr bullet. I think that back when I got the mold that was about the only choice available. With the growing popularity of CAS there has been a few other bullet design's come out but I don't know if they are any better than the original.

Accurate mold #210B. Shoots great with OE.

Sam those old Lyman/Ideal designs are hard to beat.

Don-IF you'll be shoot'n any smokeless powder in your 44WCF. Unique and WW231/HP-38 work real well.
What alloy will you use for the bullets?

Gary I got a ton of 231 and unique..
Will probably be using 20-1 or similar.
Problem came up with getting the rifle,,, the darn thing wasn't in stock...
Confused
So the search goes on, but at least I'll be outfitted with something to shoot out of one if I find it.Big Grin

Those W/73's are really popular with cowboy action shooters, especially in .44WCF. I also don't think many are/where made in this caliber.
You're really go'n to like it Exclamation
Just make sure you're wear'n your hat when firing. Most of your empties will land on it.
Just don't want to see those cases get dent'd from directly hit'n your head.Big Grin Tongue

Yeh them fragile case mouths and all..
Those guns pop up usually about a year after they are announced at SHOT. Now there are a bunch of 357's out there, so a little patience and maybe the 44's will start showing also. I just want the plain jane, don't care much for the color cased ones.
