Lee 20# pot grrrrr - Don McDowell - 08-27-2012
Narrowly avoided trajedy this morning. Was going to take advantage of the cool temps to cast some bullets. Went out and fired up the big lee pot, went back in about 20 minutes only to find a big pile of lead that had of course over flowed the ingot mould that I habitually put under the spout... Couldn't get the drip to stop no matter what sort of gyrattions I put the stopper thru...
Turns out the bottom of the pot has a hole in it, and the melt runs between the pot and the cover and comes out running down the side of the pour spout.
Always said I thought that thing was an accident waiting to happen, and this morning it just about was....

Call Midway USA and in three days you will have a new 20# dipper pot.
Or call Shiloh and get there new lead pot 75# lead pot. I looked at it and it is little pricey but well build and it would be good to mix a large batch of alloy that will be consistent

I quit the Lee bottom spout a good while ago. On the last one I had I removed the stopper and installed a dry wall screw. This stuff scares hell out of ye don't it? Sure does me!

I still got my old 10 lb dripomatic, so at least I can get some bullets cast.
This 20# pot springing a leak in the pot is the scary part, that could of been catastrophic, but at least I was able to get a batch of ingots built.

How old is that lead pot, Don?
Been using a Lee 20lb pot for 10 years now.
PIf you don't use the brain spout, put a 'BB' in the spout to stop the spout 'dribble' that they all seem to do.

Hey Kurt, that Shiloh pot is 220 vac only.

220 volt pots are a lot better , I just got one of lees and it heats way better and faster and a whole lot cheaper , it only draws 8 amps , and out in my shed that is a real plus,

Lumpy it's about 10 years old got it right after they first brought those biguns out.

Don, is the inside bottom cracked? Or could this be a rust issue from the inside, between the bottom wall and the bottom of the melt-pot?

It's got to be cracked or a hole in it. Haven't investigated it since it's cooled off enough to handle it. Don't think it's a rust problem
