1886 in 40-65 - loophole - 08-13-2015
I have sent a Winchester 1886 in 40-65 to Dennis Olsen to have a liner installed and the metal refinished. I have a Shiloh in 40-65 and have dies and a few hundred cases, and I love the caliber.
I asked Dennis to install a liner with 1:18 twist and .400/.408 lands and groves with chamber as close as possible to Shiloh.
I understand that the original Winchester used a slower twist, a .406 barrel and 265 gr. bullets. I think the action will cycle rounds loaded with 300 or maybe even 350 gr bullets and I would like to use them in the rifle.
Does anyone have any experience with a levergun with modern chamber and barrel dimensions for this caliber? any suggestions on a mold to throw a .310" bullet?

About the only part of this I can help you with is the RCBS CSA 300 bullet should work thru that like a champ.

An '86 in .40-65 will have nut'n in recoil.

Promised in two months after I did a lot of begging. I once owned a
Browning 1886 in 45-70, and foolishly sold it to pay a mortgage or some other non-essential expense. I think the 40-65 may be the ideal cartridge for serious plinking. I'm rubbing multiple coats of oil into the refinished stock.

Took the '86 to the range yesterday.
Olsen did wonderful work--worth the wait. I'm trying to post
pictures but I know far more about antique rifles than I know about computers.
I tried using some necked-down RP 45 cases I shot in my Sharps 40-65 and fl resized in a Lyman die. They would not chamber because they were about .002" too big immediately in front of the rim. I used an RCBS fl die set so the die made firm contact with the shellholder.
Most of these cases chambered OK.
Loaded Western 300 gr. roundnose and John Olsen's 260 gr fpbb bullets over 24.5gr. of 5744 and 28.5 gr. of H4198 and 30gr of IMR 4227.
Changing light, 70 year old eyes(surgery scheduled in two weeks) post and tang sights I shot a number of 1--1 1/2 groups off the bench at 50 yds, and a number of 1 1/2 with a flyer opening the groups to 2 1/2".
Recoil very pleasant with crescent but plate.
May be my favorite rifle.
Will report after more testing.
