Blackpowder ML Shotgun spring turkey - Rowdy Rick - 06-02-2015

It is not a Shiloh, but it is blackpowder. 20 ga. Ped. 65 grs GoX 2F and 1 oz. #5 shot. I was about 1/2 mile from home so walked back to get a vehicle.......getting too old to carry them that far anymore
My wife came with me and about 1/4 mile from where I shot him on top of him sits a Bald Eagle tearing him up Got some video. First time I have ever had that happen. Wasn't gone for more than 20 minutes. Kind of rare here in the Sandhills.All I use are blackpowder ML shotguns anymore. Deadly on pheasants and turkey over the years. Wish it was legal to use rifles here I would try my Shiloh.

Rick, Congratulations on your turkey, and using your ml shotgun just adds more enthusiasm to the event.
That is a very nice shotgun you have, too. Has it been choked, and how do the patterns look on paper? The reason I ask is that I'm a ml shotgun shooter myself, and ya just can't beat a limit of pheasants, grouse, etc. w/ these guns. They just add a whole new level of enthusiasm to the hunt. Thanks IR and Don. It is a Pedersoli replica. I believe it is a modified and a full choke. It patterns very nicely. The full choke barrel holds together well even at distances. I used the modified barrel for this one as he was only 30 yards. I have a 12 ga. Ped. double ML also as well as two originals. I shot my first ML turkey over 10 yrs ago with my friends original German double blackpowder shotgun. It is a beautiful gun......in my possession now
This gun was the only shotgun my friend ever hunted with and he is now close to 80. I have never felt disadvantaged hunting with these. Sure loading takes a little longer but they are as effective on game as a modern smokeless shotgun.Rick

I had an old Belgian made 14 ga, double. Loved that thing you could adjust the shot as needed. Worked great for trap or birds, sadly had to let go of it to pay some bills. Still have about a half box of all the wads, keep thinking someday....

Way to go Rick.
The 20 ga would be my choice. I been thinking about a .62 smoothie flint. That is a 20 ga this way I can use it as a fouler and for deer.
I remember when I used to get the old shot shells they had the over the shot card with a roll crimp and I tested the patterns and seldom I saw a hole in the center.
If you have a 12 ga, I have some old Alcan wads yet you are welcome to.

Kurt, I am not familiar with the Alcan wads? I shot trap one time using a guys Brown Bess loaded with shot. It was a left handed version to boot and I am right handed.....will put some sparkles on your arm doing that for sure! A smoothie for deer and fowl sounds like a good idea, it worked back then!

Don, I too have a number of guns I sold in times of need that I wish I had back. My other original is a Belgium barreled one with English Locks. One broken mainspring I need to fix yet on it. After I got my first sharps I swore I would never get another as I thought I would be doing good to get one figured out. Now 4 sharps later.........I am still trying to figure them out

Nice gobbler! I'd like to have a good double barreled BP shotgun!
And I understand about not wanting to make a 'tote goat' out of yourself! The years pile up quickly!!
