50 1 3/4 - Stephen Borud - 04-19-2015

I picked up a 50 1 3/4 #3 Sporter I had built for the wife and kids in October. I've put 34 rounds threw it so far! With my new business I've been busy! The oilfield has slowed up a bunch in the past 5 months but I've still not had the time to shoot it again. I had Shiloh put a scope on it, was really excited about it but after shooting it I won't use it for hunting, it's not a quick way to shoot, especially in the hunting department. I guess I'm use to adjusting my rear sight and boom the bullets gone. This year my oldest will be able to hunt, I need to get him out shooting this rifle and the 40/50 BN that I had built as well. The 40/50 has a little over a 100 rounds threw it, so lame that it doesn't have more lol. Oh well, the 40 is accurate, we hit a old 20# propane bottle at 600 and something yards with it several times shooting dirty! It's a joy to shoot! Anyways just checking in my friends. When I get out to shoot again I will post some pictures.

Stay Blessed

Stephen

Stephen that's neat you got more fun toys for the boys. Keep us posted on those.

RE: 50 1 3/4 - rdnck - 04-20-2015

I'm glad you took the 50 1 3/4 out for a trial run with the scope before you went hunting. A scope looks cool and is OK for target work, but can be a royal pain if not an actual handicap when hunting. Same thing with a tang sight.

You are giving your boys a superb start, and my hat is really off to you. Shoot straight, rdnck.

Stephen, Maybe you can include some details about your .50/70 rifle and your loads too. Sounds very interesting. Shoot sharp, Mike

Thanks Don and Bill. I took the scope off today and put it back into its box for a later project!

Mike, it's a #3 sported with a 28" standard weight barrel, 13" pull, nothing fancy! It has a 1-36 twist and uses Orville Loomers PP chamber. I have a 50 adjustable KAL mold that I use to use for my 50 2 1/2" Sharps that I turned up to cast a 425 grain bullet. I use 70 grains of Fg KIK, .023 card, 3/16th of lube and another .023 card. The bullets OD is .494 I patch with 9 lbs onion skin paper. The rifle does shoot well and has a very pleasant recoil with the lighter bullet.

Stephen, I have the same mould and like to keep my bullets at 473 grains, mostly for the 50-2 1/2" round. In the .50/70 I use that bullet with 70 grains of OE 1 1/2F for some pretty good shooting and my rifles have rifling twists of 1-26". What you've got sounds pretty good to me. Shoot sharp, Mike

RE: 50 1 3/4 - Stephen Borud - 04-26-2015

I have a 473 grain mold I built, I will have to try it out in this 50 1 3/4 and see how it shoots Mike. I stalked up to an antelope doe at 40 yards and shot her in the chest, a frontal shot. The bullet exited an inch below her rectum......guess it killed her! Tongue
Thanks
Stephen

I guess... So far I haven't hunted with my .50/70 but that is on the list of things to do. Shoot sharp, Mike
