In Seller's book he talks about how they did mislabel the first runs of 45-70 brass as 2 1/4, they did bring the 2.6 case out first before the 2.4 and the 2 7/8.

I also wonder, if, that 45 2 1/4 might not have been more than a misprint on some labels.... Wingate says that the arsenal messed with longer cases trying to get the Springfield rifle competitive at 1000 yds. Sooo it could be entirely possible that Sharps chambered the first runs with that length, found it wasn't quite right and dropped it.. The fast forward to the "70"s and someone had a chamber cast of one of those rifles , and whallah, we have the long throated chambers.....

Hey Don, If .45-2 1/4" ammo was made and boxed, then the box labels might be correct with that designation. I'd be very surprised though to find the designation for experimental cartridges in the catalog. Of course, several things surprise me... Shoot sharp, Mike
