RE: Time to cast, - Randy Bohannon - 11-25-2021 These topics are what this forum is for, you guys have any idea how much information is given in a few short sentences and paragraphs ? I had been trying to get set of dies for the 40-50 SBN and couldn’t get any response from CH-4D , now I know why 2years plus maybe they’ll answer a email or phone. Love the rifle build and a cool cartridge , I wanted my new 1877 to be in 40-50 SBN but no dies and no one to make some so it’s another 45-70. Kurt laid out perfectly what is required to get what you want the way you want it, thank you Sir. RE: Time to cast, - Don McDowell - 11-25-2021 Randy, you might think about leaving the 77 order to 40-50 bn. Most likely if you got ahold of some 40-65 brass, trimmed to just over length loaded and fire formed, you would never need a set of dies, but in the meantime you could scare up a set from someplace. RCBS, Hornady and Redding will all make custom dies. Might take them some time, or leave your order in with CH4D. You could probably also get in contact with Tom Outland over in Worland or Stephen Borud in Casper and get them to size brass for you when it needs it. RE: Time to cast, - Randy Bohannon - 11-25-2021 Don that’s a great idea, I just didn’t or don’t know where to look after the usual places. Also I don’t know If I can do a cartridge change this late of date. It was changed to 45-70 with the final payment. A few weeks ago I got a call from Shiloh and the fore end piece of Cecil Fredi English Walnut blank I sent was bad and stockmaker couldn’t make it work. I have not heard anything back so I assume all is good just a time delay but not sure where they are on the barrel, 32” round, polished . I suppose I could call and ask, check on the fore end as well. RE: Time to cast, - Kurt - 11-25-2021 It's getting tough to have custom dies made. I called them all for the .38-50 and not one except Dave at CH-4-D would say that he will make one but it will be two years or better. When I had my .44-75 Ballard made I had a chamber reamer made as well as a sizing die to make my own case form die set. The cost is a small fraction making your own die than having a custom die made. But you need a lathe or know someone with one that will do this 1 hr job making the die. A chamber reamer is not a good idea to use making a case form die because of the brass spring back. I have used one in the past but the whole case needs to be annealed clear down to the base and even than you have to use a case seating tool to cram the case in the chamber for about two three firings. But on the other hand..... that gives you more time to scrounge stuff to load the 40-50, and either rebarrel a rifle or order another. RE: Time to cast, - Randy Bohannon - 12-02-2021 All ready putting together one of the military carbines, would be a very different cartridge for such a rifle. As efficient as the 40-50 SBN appears to be a 26” barrel could work well I think. And pack hardened this time as well . Good point on the fore end and let’s me know where they are on the rifle. I have a call coming from them today letting me know what’s up with the fore end. RE: Time to cast, - Don McDowell - 12-02-2021 Randy a 24 or 26 inch barreled carbine in 40-50 should make a really nifty rifle. RE: Time to cast, - Kurt - 03-12-2022 Well folks, casting season is just about over and shooting season is just around the corner. Did you guys get enough bullets cast?? I been getting stocked up for the new .38-50 Hepburn and have a few over 1600 cast and patched. Finished the last couple hundred tonight and my fingers are sore from patching. Starting next week the forecast is in the 50's finally today it didn't get above 23º and tomorrow it's going to be in the 50's but I know the range will be full and the lines will get shut down every 15-20 minutes so the semi shooters will want to paste the targets. I will wait till the weekdays when most are working ![]() The first silhouette match is coming up soon and I want to get the best out of this little shooter I can. Sure is a pleasure casting these little bullets when I can cast 200 and still have a 1/2 pot full of lead.

Yep. got 50 bullets cast up and 50 rounds loaded for the 45-110 in case we have a monthly match next month, so I'm fully stocked up til those get used.!!! RE: Time to cast, - Kurt - 03-12-2022 Oh common Brian, that is not even going to warm up the barrel
