I use rifle primers and have yet to try the wad in the primer cup, with a pistol primer.
I too wasn't fully convinced about the under-powder wad deal, until I loaded up a bunch of ammo with and w/o the 'wad. I then tested them from winter to fall with the 'E' 2F. The target doesn't lie and I could see much less V and a far more rounded grouping with the .40 cal dia piece of white coffee filter paper 'wad'.
Each gun has it's own preferences. Both of my Shilohs prefer the paper under powder wad.
Just part of the fun in play'n with those old rounds and roll'n your own.

Every gun on the place prefers the 9 1/2 rp when running OE. Swiss and Express both like br-2's

Tred some R-P, LR primers awhile back with the 'E' 2f.
In my Shilohs, they shot as well without a 'wad', as did the Br2 with the coffee filter 'wad' under the powder.
Can't find R-P as easy as I can FGMM or Br2. Would like to try some more one of these days.

I have a Shiloh heavy barrel 45/90 that shoots very tight groups with 82 grains of 1Fg a hoch bullet mound. I bought that rifle in 83. My 50/90 was built in 1979 and after firing several thousand rounds threw it the firing pin hole became ragged and pitted. I sent it back to Shiloh for a 34" #1 heavy barrel and they replaced the breech block with a smaller firing pin. I haven't had any more problems. I had the original barrel shipped back.

Shiloh's customer service is very hard to beat. I also think they are building some of the best bpcr barrels in the business.
Been watching their available list, if a 45-90 roughrider pops up on there it's liable to find a home in Wyo.

The Saturday outing in Wisconsin Rapids was a really great time. Laid back and no pressure. Just shoot and check zero's and loads. I don't think anyone even kept scores. Weather was perfect with almost no wind and bright clear skies. I ran my 45-70 and used Winchester fire formed and neck sized brass, CCI BR2 primers, 80.0 grains of OE 1.5 fg, .060 poly wad compressed to .150. BACO .444 535 grain Money Bullet ( actual=527 grains) with a very slight taper crimp. 100% cotton paper sized to .4505. Chambered with just the feel of the bullet into the rifling and wiped between shots. Confirmed 300 and 600 yard zeros from last season. Spot on! 1'st shot at 600 was a outside 10 at 9 O'clock, 2'nd shot in the same place. A bit of right windage and a X on the left. Just shot my string and was pretty pleased. Very little vertical under these conditions. Big Thank's to Arnie and his crew for setting this up!

Erick it was a fun and very relaxed shoot. I got to test some loads for the .45-70 and the .45-90. Almost dead calm between the trees but a little fishtailing mirages. My last three shots with the 90 ventilated the 3" spotter with two holes and the spotter stuck in the second hole. Makes one smile when things come together.
