Kevin I have a CPA built rifle in 40-70 SS using 405 Hornaday brass . It's a shooter for sure only I sent them a Green mountain barrel because a Douglas measures at .411 and I would have to get new moulds made.I shoot 40-60 Maynard and 40-65 and all my moulds measure.409 and .410. Douglas barrels are good barrels but you would have to get a mould that casts at .412.

have you considered the 40/72?
just use hornady 405 brass as is.
ideally the chamber would not have a 45 degree transition, preferably 7 or even 4 degrees.
the little bit of extra case length offers more options with grease wads, and more power for longer range shooting.
this cartridge has proven to work well at 1000 yds in 14 and faster twists with 1.5" or slightly longer bullets of low drag design, being competitive with 45 cals.
capacity seems similar to the 40/82 of a case droptubed full of powder.

What barrel configuration did you get and what was the finished rifle weight?

#4 Winchester taper and a little under 12 pounds and I shoot BACO 400grain Kidwell money bullets and BACO creedmoor at 395 grains at the chickens.If you get a Douglas barrel Gail will stamp the groove dimensions on it under the forearm and you will have to get the mould to fit, I went with Green Mountain because I already had a bunch of .40 moulds.

I had a lengthy conversation with Gail yesterday. It amazes me how knowledgeable and helpful they are. I could hear her going through page after page of chamber reamer designs and information on brass. I ended up ordering a 40-70 SS silhouette model with a 30" number 4 barrel with a 1 in 14 twist. She said I should be able to use my 405 brass with no problems. She will also send me a schematic of the reamer used. Barrel will be around .408-.409. She will stamp it on the bottom of barrel. Wait will be 5 months. I went ahead and got the extra fancy wood on it and will finish that myself. It'll be the slowest 5 months ever. Now I got to get out the BACO catalog and start ordering 40-70SS reloading stuff.

check the reamer drawing to check that it does not have a 45 degree transition.
4 degrees is what an original Hepburn chamber cast reveals for 40/2.5.
7 degrees would also be ok, and possibly 12 degrees too to avoid lead and paper rings.
your twist will allow the use of some good bullets. excellent choice.

In my conversation with Gail. I expressed my concerns about a 45 degree transition and she said they can fix that to a 4,5 or 7 degree.
