40-65 mould - Steveu - 08-24-2023
All,
I have a highwall that has a DZ match chamber in a green mountain 16” twist. I am going to get a mould made and want to know if anyone else has the same chamber and if so, what are you using. I am leaning towards the money style gg bullet for silhouette.

Does that DZ chamber have a lot of freebore?
The reason I ask, I have one Dans Hepburns and it has .110" freebore.
I have several moulds for the .40-65 and .40-70 but mostly PP.
It's a good caliber.
I just talked to Dan a couple days ago to order a .22 and he said that he quit building rifles 6 months ago.
What a loss!!

The 16 twist may give you some problems in the wind with a money bullet. BACO's 409 396 creedmoor bullet shoots well in the 40-65's and the 40-70 that lives here.

Lyman has dropped a lot of their bpcr moulds as has RCBS, but the lyman Snover and the RCBS CSA 400 are decent bullets in the 40-65

Kurt, Dan sent me a copy of the reamer print this week and I don’t know how long the free bore is.
Don, I do have the Saeco 740. I did have the RCBS 400 csa, but sold it because I had fouling issues with it as well as the 300 & 350. Not enough lube on the bullet I suspect, and that was with the 40-50 sbn.

When I ordered my #3 .38-50 I asked several times for his print drawing but never got it. If I Ould have seen this long .110" freebore and a shallow 1.5º throat I would have said wait till I find a reamer.
It was a little effort to get it worked out but I have had long cylinder free bores in the past and learned how to get around them with a proper bullet.
The last three silhouette matches I shot I won the scope class, came in second and third so the rifle and have come to an agreement.
Granted they are just a class winner and not a match winner but it's coming along just fine.

I’ve had more leading problems with the saeco 740 than the RCBS bullets
Most likely the variation in nose diameter in mass produced moulds is a big contributor to leading.
Lubes and fouling control can be another ball of wax….

A bore riding bullet, like the "creedmoor" will pull lead no matter what the lube used.
Some will say that they don't have a lead problem but that makes me think that they just don't look hard enough
If I was going to shoot a GG bullet it would be the postell. The ogive falls way from the front driving band and if the alloy temper is correct the portion infront of the band will not make contact.
Here is an example of a "money" bullet cast with 1/20 tin/lead alloy shot in the .45-90. Even with the way the ogive of the MB drops off it will make contact with the bore and if that portion is wiped dry of lube it will smear the bore and accuracy will drop off after a few shots fired.
Walt of NEI cut me a snover mold for the .40 and it shot well for maybe 10 shots and it started to walk.
I made up a dip lube with alox and Johnson liquid floor wax and dipped the nose in it and let it dry. It makes a hard dry coating on the ogive and this stopped most of the leading problem.
Just go with a good PP and shoot.

I believe that wiping with the bore rider bullets goes a long way to slow leading. Especially if you wipe before the first shot with a lightly oiled patch, but not Kroil it seems to me kroil can aggregate leading problems if it’s not cleared from the barrel.

Seems like in the ol' days of GG bullets, I did not have a problem with them leading.
I wiped one or two wet, leaving the bore "damp"
Example,
back in 2011 at Lodi, I shot my 40-65/ 371 Elliptical Minigroove bullet. Alloy of 9+1 COWW/Lino
Had an 88/100 at 1000yds, 64 at 900 (spotter miss), and then 99-3x at 800.
No walking or etc.
No apparent leading
