45-110, stretched 348 Win? - Gunner500 - 06-15-2019 Any of you men used the stretched 348 Win brass in your 45-110's? my 16lb Shiloh came with 200 sticks of that brass, I've sat on it for 3 years, RDNCK sold me some new Jamison brass when I first brought the rifle to shoot in at his place and to also get one of his copper penny front sights. Yesterday, I full length sized all the brass, ran it all through the trimmer to get uniform length and square up a few case mouths, I then annealed all 200 sticks throwing each into a 5 gal bucket of water, just bagged it up to save for hard times, question is, if any have used this brass, did it perform well for you? does it shoot as good in your rifle as Jamison or maybe Norma basic? Thanks in advance. RE: 45-110, stretched 348 Win? - Don McDowell - 06-15-2019 Yes it does shoot well, the biggest thing to watch is as they age, they will split length wise, and sometimes without firing. But while they last, if annealed and neck thickness kept under control they work good. RE: 45-110, stretched 348 Win? - Gunner500 - 06-15-2019 10-4, many thanks Don, i'll compare it's powder capacity to Jamison, bet the stretched 348 Win. will hold more, for some reason I've never been able to get 110 grains in my 45-110.
RE: 45-110, stretched 348 Win? - Don McDowell - 06-15-2019 The stuff I have holds a bit more than the JBA brass, but not quite as much as Norma. I wouldn't worry a whole lot about 110 grains in it, Sharps loaded it mostly with 90 RE: 45-110, stretched 348 Win? - Gunner500 - 06-16-2019 Roger on capacity differences, I usually load 105grs under my 523gr paper patch bullet or the big 570gr Smerker, it's a tight fit, but I get it done without swelling cases. I really like the 45-110 cartridge. RE: 45-110, stretched 348 Win? - Fogman01 - 06-17-2019 I have tried the .348 cases, Jamison, and Norma brass for my 45-110. I even tried Starline 2.6 brass that BACO stretched to make some loaded 45-110 cartridges I bought before I knew how to load BP. The Norma brass is working very well for me. I am getting 105 grains in the cases with a .060 wad and a 560 grain GG bullet and .26 compression on Swiss 1.5 powder. That's my best load so far. The Normas hold the most but the stretched Starlines are about equal in capacity. I eventually will get around to testing some paper patched loads so I could get a little more in the Norma cases with them. I like the Normas because they have beveled case bottoms that help the breech block to cam the cases into the chamber that last little bit. RE: 45-110, stretched 348 Win? - Gunner500 - 06-20-2019 Thanks Fogman, I have heard the Norma is Gold Standard, i'll grab some if it ever comes along, just snatched up a pile of Jamison 577 Nitro cases.
RE: 45-110, stretched 348 Win? - Fogman01 - 06-24-2019 FYI: Graf & Sons and Buffalo Arms has the Norma 2.88" brass which is what I got and trimmed appropriately. RE: 45-110, stretched 348 Win? - Gunner500 - 06-26-2019 Nice, if rdnck hadn't sold me a good supply of new Jamison cases for the 45-110 I'd get all over that. RE: 45-110, stretched 348 Win? - Gunner500 - 07-06-2019 Speaking of 45-110 brass, I have some Jamison and the stretched 348 Winchester, does anyone know if the Norma basic has a thicker case head rim? I'm looking for the best brass fit for an original 1874 Sharps buffalo rifle in 45-110. Thanks for all help, advice or opinions. |
