Paper Patching a few more Question

Hello Gent`s
i have just some more questions on my way to use PPB successfuly
My first trials with PP Bullets and the best paper seems to be on the right way but pls allow me some more questions.

Actually i wrap to .450 and load the Bullet in a unsized case
it fits with a lot of space in the Case.
I push the Cartridge through my Lyman Neck sizer to have a bit more neck tension but can move the bullet out without any resistance.

Do you resize the case before seating the PP Bullet?
Do you crimp the PPB ?

My second Question is

will it necessary to wipe the barrel after every shoot ?

with my Greaser i can shoot nearly 20 or more Bullets and use a blow tube only without any less of accuracy.
I read different opinions about wiping between shots or not.

what is you advise

Klaus I resize the case before seating the bullet, that way there's less chance of ringing the patch.
You can tell if you're getting to much tension on the patch at the case mouth by pulling some of your bullets and checking the patch. If you see the ring/cut at the case mouth, then you can be assured you're looking at trouble when you fire them.

Concerning wiping--------------with a PP bullet for target work i find that i must wipe and then dry the bore to maintain accurate performance---------for hunting most patch to a bit smaller patched o.d. say 0.448 perhaps as small as 0.446 to allow chambering in a dirty bore--------i can fire several shots with my "hunting" bullets they are patched to o.446/0.447---hunting accurace is just slightly less than the "target patched" bullets---------this is for 45 caliber rifles

You might consider a sizing punch to open the sized case to a diameter that just "slip fits" the patched bullet

What I do is I size the case using a taper crimp die that I had CH-4-D make for me that is custom made for my chamber in the rifle. I can size the case neck as far down as I want to have a nice straight cylinder case mouth and not a tapered case mouth and then I use expander I made in one thousands increments from .002" neck tension to just enough to hold the bullet from falling out. Using a crimp, even a taper crimp when the case mouth is several thousands larger than the patched bullet the taper is like a funnel leaving a sharp case mouth and when the charge goes off it will bite into the bullet shank wall and if this happens you will find patch remnants that are cut at the case mouth where the bullet was seated.
Using the taper crimp die to size the case neck down keeps the rest of the unsized case chamber diameter and this helps centering the loose fitting PP bullet better in the throat.

do you think it would be necessary to use more Powder for a PPB as for a greaser to ensure that the undersized PPB will bump up and fill the bore reliable.

It really doesn't seem to---i have loaded 60 to 80 grains in my 45-70 with varying bullet alloys from 40/1 to 10/1 and can see no noticable difference in the cutting of the patch.

I can't use a snowbank to recover test bullets here in Texas---------perhaps someone else has a bit more data

Klaus the powder charge will only matter as far as accuracy is concerned. The bullet will bump up just fine no matter what the charge.

that`s a new Info for me because i was the opinion that if more powder and power affect on the Bullets base it will faster expand .
but thx for this

will give a try to FFFg Powder from Wano / Schuetzen ( Sporting Powder) for this trial
have already used Swiss and KIK - FG and FFg and FFFG Grade before.
A friend just have very good results with this Sporting Powder in his Sharps and Rolling Block 45-100 but also in his Frontstuffer.
Clean Burn , soft fouling and good results.

i`am back with some pics and results from my trial on last saturday.

just correct one info i patch to .448 not .450 as i mentioned before
Cast soft Lead and wrap with Airmailpaper.





on the other side the well known Lyman 457125 Bullet



Load with 65 grs Wano Sporting Powder FFFg for the PPB and 62 grs for the 457125.



The loaded Cartridges



Distance 100 m Barrels rested on Crosssticks
Tang Rear Sight and Bead Frontsight

the first Target shows 15 Shoots with the PPB
i clean the Barrel for the first 5 shoots after this i use a Blow Tube only


the second Target shows 20 Shoots with the 457125 no wiping between only blowtubed



the last Pic are the patch i have to use to clean the Barrel after 20 Shoots.



finaly i was not very pleased with the result for the PPB there must be more to get...

The 457125 are reliable all time
