Fired the accurate bullet
Now I'm really confused.
I loaded two different versions with the new bullet.
1st was wrapped in the 8# seth cole paper, 77 grs of KIK 2f ,cci lr primer, with a .030 fiber wad .09 felt wad and a .060 fiber wad.
2nd was wrapped in the 9# cotton onionskin, 77 grs of KIK 2f, cci lr primer, with a single .9 felt wad.

Load one at 300 yds strung a straight horizontal line across the target, you could of laid a level on that line.
Load 2 shot an oblong group about 6 inches across. AHAHHHA we found something to go on.
Blush Now heres where the confusion jumps up. As I had several more of the load 1 I decided just to go ahead and blaze away at the gong, just to get some triggertime. Those loads hammered the snot out of that gong making nice round groups.
Load 2 shot reasonably well on the gong.
So now I need to figure out which load to go with, or load them up same o same o and have another go round with em....

Don,

I know it's the thing to do, try the loads again, but one feels like they're wasting powder and lead doing it. But, the challenge is what I look at as a whole. Time-tested loads are what one really wants.

I would go with load 1. The load is giving nice round groups on the gong, which is what you want to shoot. Groups on a target won't be the same size and shape as groups from the same load on a gong. This is due to the way your eye acquires the target with its background as compared to the gong and its background. In the same vein, I find that I shoot better and more consistently at game than I do at targets or gongs. I suspect it is because animals provide a non reflective surface in the sight picture and thus less optical distortion.

Another thing is that load 1 has a thinner wad next to the bullet which will release from the bullet quicker and cleaner than the thick felt wad and thus allow the bullet to achieve stability quicker than the other load. This contributes to the smaller, round group. Shoot straight, rdnck.

Bill I was thinking the horizontal stringing like that may have been from vision problems. It was great as far as verticle went, less than an inch.
Also was using Kurt's wiping recipe of rv antifreeze mixed 50-50 with water. I like the way that works. One of these days I hope the Napa store gets around to getting their water soluble oil in.....

Don,

Here's a 32 oz. bottle of the Napa cutting and grinding oil...

I've been buying it by the pint for $8.?? with tax, but will order it in the 32 oz. bottles when I run low.

Brian I got a counter guy at Heilbruns the other day that wasn't brain dead and he actually found 1 small bottle, and he came up with a roll of the rubberized cork gasket material. That gasket material was a part of the load that shot so well the other day.
So I'm good for now, but thanks for the heads up. See you next week.
