RE: Shiloh inline seater
You can't load 'match' grade ammo with out one, IMHO.

Gary I like the ball bearings to support the case. Mine has v-blocks which I think might be less good.

I've got Redding Competition Seaters in .45-70 an .38-55 which seem to work very well, although of late I've been slip fitting my bullets mostly.

Chris.

RE: Shiloh inline seater
KW has been recommending a .446" as cast bullet quite sometime now wrapped with a thin paper which gives him good accuracy. I initially tried that bullet and I could not get it to work. Kenny was, and is still using I think a 1F powder which is what I was using also along with his rec of around a .375" compression factor. I told Dean Becker in an email that I had done all that but I still could not get that combo to work...out of my Shiloh 45 2 7/8 but THEN....along comes KIK 2F and the whole world changed with this powder! At beginning I tried the KIK 1F but no luck! Couldn't hit due east with the 1F powder. I found some yellow colored patch paper with a thickness of .0018" and now when I dry patch using it the cartridges slide into the chamber such that I can feel the paper just very slightly engraving the lands and it shoots like a dream and is consistent with no zero variability with each distance that I choose to shoot. I think the photo below has also helped improve the accuracy:

IMO having the upper edge of the patch at a consistent location at the ogive has improved accuracy, as well as using the lighter paper which I think gives a consistent 'break-away' factor when the patch separates from the bullet. I can't prove that last statement but it makes sense to me! I DO KNOW that the accuracy has improved however. Mind you....this combo is a TARGET LOAD; not a hunting load. I wipe with two damp and one dry and before I insert another cartridge into the chamber I visually look through the bore to ascertain if there is any left over minute cotton threads there which could disrupt the patch paper as the bullet travels through the bore! For a hunting load I use a .442" as cast bullet with a finished patch diameter of approx. .449" which lets me shoot several rounds without wiping giving good accuracy also but not quite as good as my target load.Big GrinSmile

Chris.

Just wipe a little case lube on the "V" blocks, and your GTG.
I too use the Red. comp. seater.

Rick thanks for that picture. I know that I could probably improve the consistency of patch placement on the bullet. I recently went to a shorter patch and it seems to be an improvement too.

I haven't tried the 7lb paper though. It would probably makes the .446" bullet a perfect fit in my .45-70.

C- sharps 40-70 ss baco .395 425 gr. 8# seth cole w55 paper with 3/16 cooke between two .060 WW wads. 64 gr. 2f KIK

Shiloh 45-120 exp. baco .441 550 gr. 9# baco onion skin with 1/4 cooke between 2 .060 WW wads. Cooke is 2 to 1 spg and jojoba oil. 115 gr. of 1f KIK.

First try with the 120= perfect sideways holes in the paper target at 200 yards but now with the above load can hit the buckets at 1000yrd 6 out of 10 times on a good day. The above load for the 40-70ss will do a 6" group at 600 yrd. steel. It was good with the gg but the pp turned it into a tack driver. The Paper Patch is a blast and it is the way the old guys did it and I like it.
