Shooting Bench

Shooting Bench
I really don't like normally configured shooting benches. I've drug my feet for 4 years because I couldn't figure out what I liked. Most are too short when trying to rest my barrel where I want and too awkward to haul around.

Tried Ricks pickup box trick, and I kept having to shoot the wrong direction cause I wasn't left handed.

Was out at the shooting range the other day and figured out if I just knelt behind the bench I was more comfortable. Realized a shooting bench doesn't have to look like everybody elses shooting bench so I finally made one that fit me.

I can kneel behind it or sit beside it, plus it flips right in and out of the pickup.

Take a look at this:

I made this primarily for my grandkids because what worked for me didn't work for them as far as forearm placement for the rifle. You could call it Afro-Engineering; the cross piece upon which the front bag rest will slide forward or back as needed. If I want to place the barrel of the Sharps on cross-stix...I've arranged for that also. A standard bench is too frickin short for that but this deal solved the problem! The cross piece upon which the bag is sitting is slotted so as to be moved over for a right handed shooter.

Looks nice, but I'd hate to have to throw that in the back of the pickup, and not sure I'd want to pull it where I go.

This one is fairly static....except when I pull it from yard line to yard line! Build you one with a set of tires....like this one with a ball hitch!! You could even put 'mud tires' on it....to help you get through those bad places!!

Hi Rick, can you post some more pics of your roll around shooting bench? I just built a 100 yd range but also want to shoot at 50 and your bench looks like the solution to me. I don't suppose you have a set of plans for this do you? Thanks, Jim Port Townsend, WA

Don't have any exact data; just got in the shop and put it together using square tubing. Top pieces came from Lowe's and I have a towbar attached. Seat is adjustable; just a flat 1/8" piece large enough to be comfortable that slides up/down inside another piece of square tubing. Slide out portion is just from scrap wood left over from another project; I used allthread rods for the adjustable in/out feature and I can lock into position using threaded nuts.

RE: Shooting Bench
One last question..... do you think a couple braces coming from near the wheels back to the area where the tow hitch is is needed? Just to stop sideways movement.

RE: Shooting Bench
does anyone recall a gunwriter called ross seyfreid.
i think he might have got the sack for calling a spade a spade, but he wrote some really good stuff.
he used to shoot some seriously powerful cartridges, and designed a special bench for the job.
much like ricks.
one of the criteria was to be able to sit behind the gun, rather than side on to it as in modern benchrest.
keep safe,
bruce.
