Hey BobW
Over on that other forum, you made some disparaging remarks about prelubing the barrel. Confused-- "Just shoot a fouling shot you says"- well I'm going to take exception with that. Tongue

there is more than one reason for prelubing the barrel.
Some Sundays, I get out of church just in time to make it to the shoot, sit down and take my only sighter for the target as my first shot.

Early on, when I had my 40-65 running very well, I did just that, sat down, shot my sighter just over the target, moved down half a target and shot the first shot for score just under the target then moved back to the original setting and proceeded to hit 29 of 29 for the rest of the match.

My quest ever since has been to find a method of "seasoning " the bore so the second shot goes in the same hole as the first shot. (without foulers).

it is doable.

Interesting! I've seasoned my muzzleloaders till they are just like my cast iron skillets. Fouling buildup is almost neglible, cleanup is a snap, and this from deep cut rifled barrels. However, I've not the guts to totally trust tallow type lubes/seasoning from protecting a Shiloh bore.

I pre lube my barrel with bullet lube softened up with a mix of Vaseline, a little lanolin. I also use this for patch lube for the round ball.
I dont use much on the patch just enough so it's rubbed in the patch then follow it with a dry patch. Or if I dont wipe I will coat the bullet and fire a fouling shot if I can for the GG or PP.
When the bore is clean and dry the first shot will leave a lead smear behind shooting a GG bullet. I have seen this checking it with a bore scope.
The reason a dog has so many friends is because he wags his tail instead of his tongue.

Brian , Mike said his dried cleaned bore gave him lead stripping problems. I made no disparaging remarks, I told him to fire a fouler with paper patched bullets that don't lead using a grease cookie made up with his grearsers lube. It may work it may not,his chance and choice to try it. bobw

Yeah no problem, winter is lengthening here too didn't snow or shit for months but has snowed 4 times in the last 2 wks. It's dry, starts melting and doesn't run anywhere just soaks in. That's what we need too. Snowed friday and yesterday and well dammit it is snowing right now. Got a few more 38 Specials to size and bell, need to get back to the casting pot. As I told Lump that keeps me away from women and likker so it's a good cheap hobby on the trail of the good life. Your women running you in circles this winter? Hah, how's that for a retort? bobw
