RE: Lodi BPTR Midrange results of 9/23,24/23
I decided to go kind of last minute. I needed to deliver some ammunition that I was helping a friend sell.
Since I was going, Neal decided he’d go too.
I was poorly equipped for the 22 match and it sure showed in my score. I took the only rifle I had on hand that could get elevation for 300 yards. A Miroku low wall is in no way a target rifle! I had fun though and will definitely be better equipped next time!
The Mid Range Match was great fun. I was really cooking for the first two 500 yard targets. Unfortunately I didn’t have enough of the ammo I was shooting for the last one and changed to another batch that might’ve been a mix from previous matches. Needless to say, things went south in a hurry putting me in 11th place at the end of the first day. Neal had built up a strong lead by then and I knew he was looking good to win the aggregate.
On Sunday I decided to shoot the grease groove ammo I had along and things went much better. I finished first for the day but couldn’t crawl out of the hole that I’d dug for myself on Saturday.
Neal hung in there and finished first in the aggregate with Sam Thompson just behind him.
It was a fun weekend of shooting and seeing people I don’t often see. My thanks to Cliff, Mark, Matt, and Robin for the great match.
Congratulations to Arnie for the 99-3 at 500 which was the high single score shot on either day!

If I’m not mistaken, five of the top ten shot grease groove. The top two did for sure. Honestly, I’m starting to rethink the merits of paper patch!

Jim,
It's not so much the type of bullet it's mostly the person sending it down range as well as his coach telling him what is going on down range and load development.
The PP verses the GG bullet is a choice. For me the PP I can control the fouling better no matter what the alloys are they wont leave a smear building up behind in the bore if the alloy is not proper. The paper jacket will to an extend keep the bore clean from lead if the patch is proper.
But it all comes down to the person and his coach if they shoot as a team and it is a team effort how the outcome at the end of the match.
The reason a dog has so many friends is because he wags his tail instead of his tongue.

Kurt,
I would never argue the points you’ve made here. Especially in regards to the shooter/spotter connection. Neal and I try to shoot together once a week from the time the snow’s gone until it comes again. We have access to a 12 point, 600 yard range complete with target carriers. We’ve learned a great deal by doing this.
I’ve shot PP since Jim K got me started a few years back. However, I’m slowly shifting to GG. I find it very accurate in my rifles without the fouling control hassle. I’ll still use PP for long range matches, just to take advantage of the increased powder capacity. However, after seeing Neal take a very close second to me at the last Harris LR match, I may be rethinking that as well. His load... 62 grains of 1/2 and a 530 Lyman Postel.
