Pistol primers and breech block damage?

It sounds like they got the firing pin channel cut to deep in the breach block maybe.

That’s very possible Kurt. This was an early covid rifle. Kind of like a Monday Ford. I’ve had to fix a few things.

Jim that's not uncommon for CSA, if you get a good one it's great, if you get a different one it will wear you out trying to fix all the stuff.

So what do you all think the verdict on large pistol primers in a Shiloh is? I found some Rem 2 1/2 and bought some because I noticed some of the top shooters use them. I loaded a few with a manila folder wad under the primer. It still sits slightly deep though. Does a wad mitigate the "dents" or does the burn still find its way back to the block anyway? I have a lot of rifle primers so I'm not to anxious about it - I have wanted to compare LP with the LR and work up a good load for my 1877 but I don't want to damage my new rifle doing it.

Ive now gone thru 2k pistol primers in my 38-55 and the block looks just fine. My new powder may not like the pistol primers but I will definitely try them first.....

Many of the original Sharps Rifles had a bushed firing pin hole as a repair for a cratered firing pin hole.

It’s common enough, if you’re the original owner Shiloh will replace the block under warranty. I believe with nearly 20,000 rounds on the old hell bitch rifle it’s on the 3rd breach block now.

My 40-70 is on its second block yet it was originally a 45-70 with 10,000 rounds on that barrel and over 6000 on this barrel.

Ps pistol primers if not headspaced in some manner will certainly do this as they are shorter then the large rifle primer.
