RE: Rolling Block Re- Barrel
Bob, a lot is going to depend on what your going to use it for. For Silly wets your probably goign to want a fast twist to be able to shoot those long heavy bullets. Something in the line of a 12 twist. For hunting with cast bullets a 15 twist will be just fine. There are many good barrels out there these days, Douglas, Green Mountain. Kreiger, and others. There is also the option of having a liner installed. TJ liners seems like they are about the best choice but I don't know what they offer in twist and diameters.
Now all of that being said, I have a 38-55 with a 15" twist and it shoots well with up to 33o grain bullets. Its a Badger barrel, 30" on a CPA action. I have on occasion left a ram standing but that could be solved by going to a bit faster powder I think. I have a Hoke mold for a 300 gr tapered bullet that shoots lights out, or so it seems. I shot some over a cobbled together load of I think about 45 grains of old CTG powder and went 10 for 10 on pigs. Kind of hard to beat that just tossing things together to see if they would work.
Also keep in mind that most chambers are cut to 2.125 and most brass is short, about 2.098. Starline does make the right length brass for the longer chamber.
