MVA Scope Suggestions
I have never used a scope on the Sharps, was thinking of getting an MVA Scope. I am looking for any suggestions , will be shooting Silhouette , or tying to anyway . I will be using it on a Shiloh Sharps 45-90 Long Range Express.

If you think you won't ever shoot anything other than silhouette or possibly midrange bptr , my suggestion is the MVA B5 in the #2 mounts.
Having said that , if you even think there may be a possibility of shooting longer distance, then go to the 23 in MVA, again in the #2 long range mount, or get a DZ in the Unertl type mounts.

My favorite scope is the MVA 23" with DZ Arms mounts.

RE: MVA Scope Suggestions
I'm just getting serious switching over to a scope. This started around 10 years ago when I got my first MVA 3000 scope and it's been a on and off deal for me. I don't like using a scope and before my eyes went down hill I shot better with the tang then with the scope but these last two years I found that it's a necessity if I want to stay with competition shooting.
The MVA scope are tops I think. Good clear glass and parallax adjustments are great but their mounts in my opinion take second and third place over the DZ mounts. The DZ mount will give you enough elevation to adjust from 100 yards to 1000+ with out the need of changing the rear riser block to get to the 1K and loose the close 200 yards.
The DZ scope and their mount are a good combination. I have the 8X DZ scope and it is a quality scope.
The 3000 MVA scope I have in 6X is quality, very bright and good cross hairs. I would not get it with a center dot, it covers to much target as well as the B-5. I have the 3000 with their Creedmoor mount and it's been a problem for me because of over adjusting and I can't read their hash marks for making fine adjustments and there is a lot of back lash that can loose the precise adjustments you need.
I went with the next MVA to the B-5 scope with their #2 mount. The #2 mount does what I need and it's fine for precise adjustments but again the DZ mount I like better, easier for me to see. And I don't like the grass hopper spring holding the scope up. I tend to bump it and it gets pushed over changing the elevation. It caused me to shoot over a couple times
The 5X scope is clear and bright and I use it for the silhouette match mounted on the .40-65 but it's limited for long range unless you use a higher rear block but you loose the close again.
The last scope I just got this winter is the MVA A 10X scope with the Silhouette rear mount the the regular front mount.
The scope is fine, good parallax adjustments but the scope gets a little to dark with overcast days. I thing getting it with the 6 or 8X this would not be a problem but I would have to look through one to say for sure. Again I made the mistake getting that mount, I should have ordered it with out the mount and got the DZ mount. I like the longer Pope rail it has over the short DZ or the 3000 MVA. I don't like the DZ rail but it functions ok.

These are my personal likes and dislikes between these three scopes.

If I was to get another MVA scope it would be the A scope in the 6X and use the DZ rear mount with the MVA regular front mount because of their wind gauge adjustments that you can set for a dead wind zero or and always come back to zero switching the wind conditions with out trying to remember zero. This gets to be a need when you age. Smile

RE: MVA Scope Suggestions
Thanks for the info guys, I don't do competition , and here in NY not much of a chance to shoot 1000 yards .I just enjoy shooting, and like the look of the old full length scopes. Pondering on what to get, I like the MVA Series 4000, but don't want to jump into anything . The MVA site says the Creedmoor Site will adjust from 50 yards to 1200 yards . It looks like regular cross hair reticle , with the regular MVA front site gets me part way, will have to decide on the rear ,

RE: MVA Scope Suggestions
If you really want a longer scope, I'd advise giving some thought to the 28" one. I have one of those on one of my rifles ( with the Creedmoor mounts ) and like it, just not quite as much as I like the 23" with DZ mounts. I've heard some people complain about the front lens getting dirty if it's too close to the muzzle. I haven't had that on my 28" one but I could see it on the full length ones.

Another thing to think about is the weight of the scope. That won't matter much unless you end up trying silhouette. The longer scopes are pretty heavy and make it harder to be steady shooting offhand.

Oh yeah, another thing :-), the reticles on those scopes are easy to change, so you can always change your mind and order a different reticle cell later and swap it yourself.

"...like the look of the old full length scopes."

Most of the Sharps era scoped rifles I've seen have full length scopes on them if the traditional look is part of your consideration. The shorter scopes came later.
