RE: Remington No 1 Creedmoor
My take is that a 44-77 is a very good long range cartridge in its own right. The 40-85, not so much. Shoot straight, rdnck.

RE: Remington No 1 Creedmoor
NOW, when and where will you attend a mid range target match ?
I will probably check out the matches at the Colorado Rifle Club in Byers, CO. They have mid and long range matches. The range closer to me only has 500 meter silhouette.

RE: Remington No 1 Creedmoor
when you rebarrel, you have the option of matching the rifling twist to the bullet.
in this case the bullet will be 1.55" long, and will require 1:12 twist.
this will do anything a std twist 44/77 can deliver, as it will have higher b.c. bullets delivered with good speeds.
there should also be room in the case for sealing and/or lube wads.
a fast twist 40/72 on steroids. this works, and the bigger version will have a bit more.
of course if you seat the bullet out in the 44/77 to hold more powder, and speed up the twist, things might look different.
stats on fast twist 40s are few and far between, as there are few of them.
however of the few out there, a high percentage of owners are happy with them.
also the few results with 40/85 ballards suggest that they shoot well.
just haven't heard of one of them with a fast twist yet.
keep safe,
bruce.

RE: Remington No 1 Creedmoor
trouble with that cartridge is it just looks so good.
it also seems incredibly versatile.
I wonder what twist would be required for a 1.5" to 1.55" long bullet.
will do some sums when time permits.how would the 44/77 case capacity compare with the 44/2.6" straight? (kurt? or zack?)
don, your 1300 fps appeals to me. I want 1300 to 1400.
keep safe,
bruce.

Since you cant get OE I will give you the Swiss 1.5 filling the case completely and secreting it off flush.
The .44-100-2.6 case as fired in my chamber which is very tight and will only except a PP bullet it will hold 102 gr of 1.5 swiss.
The .44-77 unsized will hold 90 gr of 1.5 Swiss flush with the case mouth.
When I breach seat the .44-100 st. I use 100 gr of Swiss 1.5 for the accuracy load the last time I used this powder in this rifle using a 507 gr 1.465" long bullet and I use this in a 1/17 ROT.
The .44-77 has a 1/19 ROT and I use 72 Gr of 2F OE for the accuracy load and I use a PP bullet of the original profile 1.350" long and it weighs 485 gr. and also the same profile original 500 gr 1.410" long with 76 gr or 2F and it will reach 1585 yards.
In the .44-100-2-5/8 Sharps BN 19 ROT my load is 94 gr of 2F OE and a 507 gr 1.465" long elliptical bullet breach seated with the same bullet I use 105 gr or 2F OE with just a .060" cork wad, no lube. the case will hold 107 gr of 1.5 swiss flush with the case mouth.
I have .44's with the 1/19, 1/17 and 1/16 ROT. If I was to make another .44-77 I would use a 1/17 ROT with a standard light 32" barrel. This caliber will reach as far as what your sights will let it shoot sights on center of target. Very good Caliber.
