Sam I wipe it on after the bullet is seated, and then continuing to follow the instructions from the 1875 remington catalog, I wipe off the excess with a cotton clothe. In my case I bought a package of tea towels and the local big box store,,, of course I did not get full control and use of them until the lady of the kitchen decided they didn't serve her purposes any more.
