I think I'm done
working on getting a load for this .44. I don't understand why more shooters are working with a .44. Old Kelly O shot a .44-70 with great success. I know that he was a little controversial but if one would listen to what he said a lot could be learned from him.
This rifle has always shot well from the go. It has a 1/17 twist Krieger barrel chambered with my reamer and it shoots a 507 gr PP prolate bullet quite well with 92 gr of 3F OE. Here is the final target with 3 and 7 shots at 185 yards. The pit was flooded with water so I set up in front of it. I had the DZ scope mounted on this test.
Now to get the rest shooting.

Most folks don't want to mess with a 44, because all the internet experts tell them they are to hard to get to shooting and bullet selection is very limited..Dodgy Cases to hard to make... oh my the list goes on...

But to those that take the plunge, it's a satisfying endeavor..Smile

Kurt I've thought of .44's, but am trying to limit the number of different cartridges I load for :-). What case do you form your .44-70's from? I thought they were sized down .45-70's, but obviously not if you are getting that much powder in there.

Chris

I don't have a .44-70. I have a .44-75-2.5, .44-100-2.6 and a couple .44 BN's (.44-90) and the .44-77.
All of my straight walled .44's use the .45 parent brass.
All of my .44's are for long range shooting except for the .44-77 it is my hunting rifle.....Kurt

Ah, I see where I got the .44-70 from. You'd mentioned that Kelly Roos shot one. I think Zack Taylor shoots a .44 sometimes too eh?

The .45-90 sized down to .44 could be interesting, if for nothing that to reduce recoil just a little bit.

RE: I think I'm done
Chris the 45 2.4 cases sized to 44 are nice. I have one already, and soon will have another that will be chambered using Zacks reamer. (the same one he shot the snot out of that spotting disc at Byers at 900 yds.)
