Museum of the Fur Trade

My wife and I went to the Museum of the Fur Trade in Chadron, NE (http://www.furtrade.org) last week on our way to the Custer State Park buffalo roundup. The Museum of the Fur Trade was absolutely great. There were many different long arms (muskets and rifles) from the early days of the fur trade from across America and up to Alaska. Several Hudson Bay and American Fur Company trade guns, a Sharps 50-90 buffalo rifle, a Remington rolling block 44-77 buffalo rifle and too many others to name here. Clothes they made, traps, canoes and how to load them (some large canoes got 3 tons of stuff in them) all kinds of things I never knew. And who ever heard of this great museum in Chadron???? The owner has written two books that have won bronze medal for meticulous research - Firearms of the Fur Trade and Clothing and Textiles of the Fur Trade. If you are around Chadron - even if you are not - I would highly recommend this museum.

And the buffalo round up in Custer State Park was AMAZING. Where else can you see over 1000 buffalo thundering right past you with real life cowboys herding them? They move them to the stock pens to sell a few and vaccinate the young ones. The Park does a great job of running the show and there was a pancake breakfast and BBQ lunch on site. There was no charge to go and watch. Couldn't be better.

I keep thinking I'll get over there to that museum, but haven't made it yet. It's not very far from here, guess I need to quit speculating and get er done.
