Take a gander.....

RE: Take a gander.....
Sam I used to do that with diamond wire plate glass but this works better. With hard balls cast with some WW or tin added for penetration on large game that I like to use, the wide sprue I get from my Lyman moulds takes a little more time to get them ironed out.
Yes you get real small dents in the pure lead balls but nr worse then you see on the swaged round balls.
I been trying to figure a way to put dimples like golf balls on them so they fly farther. Tongue Big Grin

interesting concept but I would think that some of them would iron out on fireing. Maybe if you tossed in a hand full of steel ball bearings it might put some dimples on the balls. Just an idea to try sometime. If it don't work at least you can always toss them back in the pot and make them new again.

I see you like that idea. If you can locate a tooling shop that uses MHT surface grinders, there is a chance that they replace the table bearings on a regular basis, these are the bearings that the table runs on for the back and forth travel. Those bearing balls are around 5/8 dia or so and might be what your looking for, if not I think that MSC and other places sell hardened steel balls for a descent price.

We have a Franz Bearing plant in town that makes all sizes. Man I spent a lot plumbing service calls in that place cleaning bearings out of the drain pipes.
Just take a bunch of 1/16" bearings and cover a ball in a garlic press and squeeze. That should do the job. Smile

Do I want to know the answer to "why were the bearings in the drain pipes?"

Sam.

All of those drains where 6" lines with grease traps and catch baskets. When the baskets got full and the water wwould not run off they pulled the baskets. Then the pit traps filled up and the bearings ran down the pipes.
But the time I spent digging out the pipes and pits lets me enjoy what I do now.

Hi Kurt

What I want to know is after dimpling the balls, how are you going to get a back spin on them? Huh

Big Grin You betcha I can. Big Grin Never had a problem getting a major hook on one when I teed off. Why would it be any different shooting a dimpled lead ball?? I hit a guy on the 18'th teeing off the first, complete 90 degree. Big Grin that's when I started hanging the balls on a Eye hook and string and now I shoot those balls Tongue
