Any Elk?

Any Elk?
Son and I returned last Thursday night from Colorado. We both got nice Bulls. I carried my 1895 Winchester, 35 WCF every time I went except the one time! And this bull came out in a herd of about 50 cows and spikes. That evening I was packing my 1895 Browning copy in 30/06. Still an offhand shot at 100yds.

Son had a bit of bad luck. As he has a bad shoulder. And he was packing his Shiloh Montana Roughrider. A wrong step down into a drainage ditch cause his shoulder (old injury) to almost dislocate while packing his Shiloh. So until it got to feeling better he used his old sporter M1917 in 300 H&H which has a sling. And he got this bull with it. Needless to say he was deeply disappointed he didn't get one with his new Shiloh!!! He burned a lot of powder before the hunt getting ready!!! He will be getting a new no drill sling for it. Always next year.

Nice elk!! Lots of meat there!
I wish I had a big bull tag. As it is, I just hope I see a spike.

Nice work! Was this a self guided hunt or did you go with a guide service? I want to hunt Elk one of these days and always looking for recommendations. Thanks

Thanks!!! We are pretty spoiled. We hunt on a private ranch owned by my aunt and cousins. In unit 18, up between Granby and Grand Lake Co.

James shot his elk at the base of the mountain out in the hay field. I was able to drive my pick up and trailer up to him. Used come along and had him loaded in a bit. I on the other had, shot mine in the bog at the edge of the willows. Finally faniggled a 4-wheeler in where we could pull him out to dry ground. Then ranch foreman brought out the front end loader and we loaded him up. Told you. We're pretty spoiled!

Fairly familiar with that country, we had a little place about a mile below Grandby dam on the river. Spent a winter feeding cows with a guy up the road and just west of Grand lake.

Good country! Sounds like over toward Stillwater. I enjoy it up there. I have a cabin on the ranch I wish I could get time to work on. It's livable but needs a bit of TLC. But due to family medical situation this has been the first opportunity Ive had to get back up there in years. It's just the kind of place that needs an 1895 Winchester hanging on the wall! Smile

There's even an old fella buried out in the front yard under a boulder. Died in 1918. Mebbe Spanish flu? I dunno, just a guess. Date and initials carved on rock. Mentioned in deed too! Cabin was allegedly built in 1890's. Or there abouts. Then another fella came in prolly in the 30's and built other little cottages around it for tourist to come visit RMNF or fish in lake Granby. There are pencil autographs and dates on interior walls of different families and vacations! Pretty cool
Tidbit of history.
