ChristmasHunting
HI folks----------hope everyone had a great holiday season !!!!!!!!

Caleb and i headed to the ranch for a day or two hunting, we hit the only day and a half with nice weather !!!!!!!!!!---had a great time exploring and listening to the coyotes sunday evening around the campfire.

Monday morning we were comfortable and quiet in the "Dry Creek Blind" waiting for the day to come to life----watched the birds and small critters till about 8:30 when the deer started to move. This 8 point wandered out with another bigger buck and about 6 does, i rested the Shiloh and put a paper patched flat nosed hollowpointed slug high through both lungs, took about 40 steps and died in his tracks.

Caleb and i loaded up and went to camp, in about an hour the buck was on ice--------this is a "management" deer on this ranch-------i didn't get a pic of the 11 that was with him---perhaps next trip i'll concentrate more on the critter pics.

We scouted monday till about 4 and decided to set up a portable blind on a sendero with a bunch of hog rootin----set the 375 on the sticks and waited till almost black dark------no joy--------we'll concentrate on pigs and coyotes the next trip

Tuesday morning we went scouting again with the weather deteriorating by the minute, we only saw a doe out foraging--unusual for this ranch, critters were holed up ahead of more bad weather so we cleaned up-loaded up and hit the highway to home.

Steaks are cut wrapped and in the freezer with about 40 pounds of cubed up venison for grinding later destined to be deer burger and sausage.

Jerky is drying for snaks for the next hunting expedition !!!!!!!!!!!

Heading for the shop to cast a bunch of PP Money Bullets from a new Brooks mold (Christmas gift from the kids)

Keep well and stay safe

Awsome Dave.

And congrats on your deer; a good deer to be sure. A couple of fine pictures, too, and your grandson definitely enjoys hunting w/ you.

Hi Ramrod------------ a "sendero" is a road cut thru scrub in south texas, i'm sure its spanish in origin, you can see one where we set up the portable blind, it runs out into a pasture about 100 yards from the blind. Same as old logging and woods roads through the north woods.

Stay warm up there sir, looks like a nasty weekend coming up

RE: ChristmasHunting
Bruce I would say that it is not an electric fence. There are wires attached directly to the post, no insulators. Being an old farm boy, insulators is one of the things you look for before garbing a hold of a fence to cross it. One always wants to make sure if a fence has juice in it before you step across in case certain parts of your body come in contact with the fence. No personal experience but I did see my father do a dance out across a field once or twice when he had gotten bit, his legs were a bit shorter than mine are.
Dave, Nice deer by the way, looks like the 2 of you had a nice hunt.

RE: ChristmasHunting
Hi Bruce----Sam---------------Sams got it just a crossfence separating the sendero form the surrounding thicket-----this one isolates a 400 acre pasture.

Electric fences can be tricky specially the "weed burners"

It was a fun day and a half----we were hoping for a weeks hunt but the weather just isn't cooperating.

RE: ChristmasHunting
dave here in oz we have wooden posts made of what is called insultimber,
electric wires can be attatched directly to them.
those posts look like insultimber, and it would have been interesting to see it in the usa.
keep safe,
bruce.

RE: ChristmasHunting
Interesting Bruce----------------insultimber hmmmmmmmmmmm --------------i have seen some fiberglass posts a long time ago but they never gained a foot hold----------steel "t" posts are the order of the day.

Keep Oz safe Sir

dave
oz is not safe here today.
there is a bushfire threatening us and 110 km/hour winds are forecast.
we hope for a change of wind direction.
keep safe,
bruce.
