RE: Need some sugestions
Hello Sir Kurt. Please pardon that this reply on caliber selection has arrived post thread changing to most recent topic.
It takes a long time for those electrons to float all the way East here to OhioSmile The latest discussion on thread has drifted to "fuel for thoughts" while I was researching my reply. Possibly dipping a cup in recent conversations helps thinking up new things tooTongue FWIW in main discussion of Brass with smaller rims to fit your project rifle a candidate comes to mind. In publication "Down Range Data" William T. Falin extols on virtues of his design of a 40-444 or 40 Falin. It is based of course on 444 Marlin brass with 0.514" rim dia. He runs the full length brass into die that is tapered to 0.750" from case mouth were it turns into straight neck. Falin's game and 100 + page booklet covers long range BPCR shooting. His book particularly involves Billy Dixon range and ballistics for 1540 yard shooting. Best regards all RobertB

Robert.

I remember reading about a Falin wildcat caliber some years back based on the .444 but seems like it was a .35 caliber that had a long gentle tapered shoulder. Dave Cook out your way has a CPA using the .444 case necked down to hold a .416" bullet.
What I'm after is to keep it as original as I can in a .25 or .28 caliber using parent brass still available or have RMC make the original brass with the proper head stamp.

RE: Need some sugestions
Kurt, I see now, your interested in traditional caliber as you probably shot in yer youth, say 40-70 Ballard Wink It is always exciting to keep planning / plotting on rifle projects particularly when winter is knocking on the door. To digress my latest barrel swap (shhhh;-) was a new fangled caliber (20 Practical/ 20-223) I know it may be blasphemy here. So pardon is begged in advance until motive revealed. I.E. Refitting a PD rifle most suited to Montana area is in hope of getting to burn it out say in Baker, Mt where the Ol' 74 Sharps could go along for "protection" from any marauding steel critters. I do envy geography that matches these Ol' LR BPCR rifles and Ol'shootests. Conversations here, nearer civilization, on BPCR topic usually involves educating folks as to why shooting 1/2 a mile or so is good innocent excitement or even possible. Horrors some college pilgrims around here ask what was a Buffalo let alone rifleWink Keep up the good work I'll be looking for your reports. RobertB
