All,
I would like to start by saying how great the members of this forum are. If you dig long enough you will find what your looking for. I have read a lot of posts from Jim Kluskens, Don and Kurt. I also had advice from Kenny Wassaburger and design expertice from Arnie Seitz with the final design of the DDEPP. I thank you all!
I also want to thank Doug Fleming at BPCR3D.com for his paper patching tools and videos on how to wrap patches.

This all started when I messaged Jim Kluskens about the PP bullet he used for his 40-50 SBN with a 18" twist in Jan. 2022. I was looking for a better bullet for the ram line and take care of the leading issue I was having. Unfortunately, I did not follow thru with Jim in a timely manner.

I picked up a Highwall in 40-65 and decided that I wanted to shoot it in some local long range gong matches and maybe some BPTR matches and my GG bullet wasn't going to work. After lots of reading, I decided on the DDEPP bullet. I sent the design to Steve Brooks and got the mould in 3 weeks. I used Arnies 9+1 alloy to start. Wet patched with SC55W, the 400 grain bullet sits on top of 70 grains of Swiss 1.5 fg with a .060" ldpe wad to top it off. The seating depth is .150". I loaded the Starline cases that I formed using a RCBS 40-65 forming die and finished it off in the RCBS FL cowboy die that I had lapped out the neck.

I loaded 8 rounds up and went to the range to shoot at 200 yards. 2 warm up shots and 6 for a group. Wind was at 11:00-1:00, 10 to 15 mph and about to rain. Avg. velocity was 1325fps, ES 20 fps with WWLRM primers. I also recovered a bullet I shot this morning from the berm.

Now I just have to figure out the case stretch issue! Cheers, Steve

All,

I have received my mould from Steve Brooks for my 40-65 and it shoots great, I will right up a post about it later. Right now I have been experiencing .005"-.007" of stretch per firing. I initially loaded some new cases that were formed from starline brass. I have been fireforming this lot of brass with my GG bullets and I get ZERO stretch. I loaded up 8 rounds for a quick test and noticed that all the cases grew .005-.007". I did some research and talked to Kenny Wassaburger and I trimmed the test cases back .002" in case the mouth was grabbing the bullet. More testing showed no improvement. But, on another forum there was a guy having the same issue I have. He used some rosin powder on the cases to see if that would help. I tried it and I found only a few cases stretched to .001". This led me to believe that my chamber is too slick after I had lapped it with some 400 grit and a fired case to alleviate the sticking case issue I had before the PP bullets. So I got some 320 wet/dry and a dowel and by hand I scuffed up the chamber by hand (I don't have a lathe). I loaded 2 cases that were trimmed to my chamber length, that were fired 3 times without annealing, 70 grains of Swiss 1.5fg and my 400 grain DDPP that light finger pressure will seat the bullet in the fired case. The necks were clean and I chamfered them before loading.

Any ideas on what to do?

Cheers,

I’ve watched very experienced and successful shooters who shoot muzzle loading rifles at our long range matches. Their PP bullets slide down the bore very easily. Practically from the weight of the loading rod. Their rifles shoot every bit as well as the best of our cartridge rifles.
This loose bullet fit is contrary to the way I learned. Do you believe the bullet should be a rather snug fit when the cartridge is chambered? Or, is loose better?
I can push my bullet wrapped in SC55W through the bore with one finger on the rod. The same bullet wrapped in my usual 9# paper requires a firm push. I’ll soon try the looser bullet on the target but thought I’d ask your opinions in advance.

I’m curious. What method are you all using to hold your bore sized, patched bullets in the case?
I’ve tried a few different things in the last couple years. Currently it’s the Redding neck size die. This is strictly a “by feel” operation. I’m wondering if anyone has a sure fire and consistent method.

Gentlemen , here are some photos of my recent firing and recovery test. I cast a few of the Jim 442 500 bullets using Rix mix lead alloy, wrapped in canson tracing paper. The cartridge is my 44 90 straight. Brass is stretched remmington 45 70, trimmed to 2.40". Primer is cci br-2. Coffee filter under power, 90 grains of Swiss 1.5 f. I compressed with a milk carton wad, then added a wad cut from a 5 gallon plastic bucket. I shot three rounds into a snow bank I made by shoveling the driveway. One of the bullets must have struck something in the snow. I added a couple of unfired bullets for comparison. I welcome any interpretation of the results from the forum membership.
I never heard of such a thing until I saw Don mention one on the cast bullet forum.
I looked it up and ended up spending a whole eight bucks for one from amazon.
I used it today. What a great idea if you’re wet patching! It drys patches completely dry in a couple minutes. Highly recommended!

I had some time to sit down with my new Steve Brooks .44 caliber, 490 grain elliptical paper patch mold yesterday. This was only the 3rd time I had cast with it and I seem to be getting the hang of it.

I cast 100 bullets, all were between 489.8 and 490.8 grains.

I did have several about mid way through that had a visible flaw after I lowered the temperature a little too much once the mold and I got in a good rhythm, but raising the temperature just a bit cleared that up quickly. Any bullet with a visible flaw is put back in the pot right out of the mold.

I have many of Steve's excellent molds, but this one is becoming my favorite!

It certainly has warmed up some, we've had a few days in the 50s and even one that was in the 60s. The snow has taken a hit and we are at that point where it's either slush or mud. The mornings aren't too bad as things dry up overnight and even freeze just a bit.

This morning I set up a target at 220 yards to shoot the first test with the flat base version of my new Brooks nose pour adjustable mold. I decided to start where I left off with the cupped base bullet.

Brooks .434" adjustable original Sharps profile set at 1.340" long and cast from 17-1 using lead:95/5 solder. It weighs 485 grains and is patched with Staedtler tracing paper (.0015") and sized.

BACO brass primed with Remington 2 1/2 LP and filled with 82.0 grains of Swiss 1 1/2 lot # 18-01-2021. I seated a .060" LDPE under a .060" HDPE with very little compression leaving the bullet .150" in the case.

Temperature was 36 degrees with 76% humidity and the wind at 9 to 11 mph from 12 o'clock with slight shifts left and right.

For whatever reason the first shot went to the right, but the next 4 went into just over an inch. The extreme spread finished at 2 11/16" for the 5 shots. This is the first time I've shot anything in 3 months.

I also loaded 3 each with everything the same except increasing the powder charge in 1 grain increments to 85 grains (83, 84, 85). At 84 grains I started getting more vertical spread, but all the groups stayed under 3 inches.

I plan to cast some more of these at 485 grain bullets and load them up the same with 82 grains for more testing and to use at whatever match turns out to be next after the Lodi spring match at the end of April. That match I will shoot with my .45-70 and then switch to my .44-77 for the rest of the season.

I will also cast some that are longer and heavier to test and compare to how the 485s do. The 82-grain load looks like a good place for now so I think I'll stay with that.
