All,
I sold my 40-50 to my neighbor who wants to load smokeless for it. He wants it for plinking and hunting pigs/deer. Bullets are the RCBS CSA 350 and SAECO 640. He has some 3031 on hand and I have some N135, N140, 2400 & Trailboss. I may be able to scrounge up some 5744. Anyone have any loads with what I have to use?

Cheers,

Well its been a while since my Single/Action days and I miss my customised # B92 Browning...so I finally put a deposit on a 92 carbine in 44 WCF. I've had the 44 magnums before and loved them but wanted to run with a traditional for action cartridge and have had experience with the 44/40 in the past. It will be the 20" carbine ( not the short rifle ) and I believe is running 1/36" twist for the stubby 44 bullets. I 'imagine' the modern Miroku 44's, be they 73's or 92's are running .429 bores...but I'm not sure. Anyone here have any first hand experience ? Plenty of 'keyboard guestimates' to be found but as I'm looking to organise a mould from Accurate, I'd like to get it right. I see the lawyers / regulations got to the manufacturers..so I've a rebounding hammer and I gather numerous other changes to the firing pin/ safety mechanism..but they still look mighty tidy.

A friend of mine is bound and determined to shoot a grease groove bullet and smokeless powder in his Shiloh 40-65. We worked up a very nice load with black powder and PP bullets but he’s just not wanting to mess with all of that sooo what do you guys that shoot this calibre recommend for a bullet and powder/powder charge etc? I’m clueless when it comes to smokeless and GG bullets in a Sharps.

Thanks

what it's like to load small rounds like the .308 Win.
I haven't touched my 700 Rem Varmint synthetic .308 Win for many years. I was at the range today with my .44-77 Farmer shooting and it didn't take long till I had a couple guys standing behind me watching. I offered to let them shoot a couple rounds and one guy took the offer and shot two rounds and got up from behind the rifle and said man that thing really belts you don't it. The other guy declined shooting it. I wonder what he would have said if I was shooting the .45-2.6 or the .50
I got to talking with them and they said we will have a sniper match on Sunday come on and join us, I said I have a .308 and a couple others but I don't have anything loaded or have powder for it.
When I got home I started digging behind some ammo boxes for the .308 cases and I found 5 50 round boxes of loaded rounds but they been loaded since 3/6/93 well I guess it's time I shoot them empty so I put the Bananza bench seating die in the press and I set the seating stem .03" deeper and cracked the bullets loose and they snapped some breaking loose for sitting so long.
I dug in the powder locker and I did find a can of 4895 and I loaded 50. The 168 gr bullets are so small that I got my fingers pinched a couple time seating the bullets.
Range time again tomorrow and check the sight setting.

Lately I've enjoyed looking into the "dark side" ;-) I.E. loading BOTH BP and Smokeless in different rifles for different events. As a 73 year old Geezer it is a privilege to do so. The BP is in 40-65 and NRA Silhouettes are that game. Since the serious BP is a new adventure the results to date have not pushed the fun meter. However to restore my soul the 45-70 is loaded with #457132s and 25 gr. of IMR 4198 for equal velocity in my '74 replica Sharps. With this "white load" we attended a high power rifle 600 yds. practice match week ago. Pleased to say first round was on paper ( 3 min high 2 min right of X). I'd figured elevation to be just over 1 inch mark on the staff of Soule long range rear sight By end of session the 45-70 was tuned into 9-10 & X ring on standard 600 yd center. Three of us cross over shooters using 19th century iron had similar experience shooting smokeless along with the High Power rifle shooters. The one thing really different was the bore in the Sharps did not need nor receive maintenance until the rifle was home. Just for further tonic the same '74 Sharps and 4198 load was used this past Sunday at gong match in Defiance Ohio (hanging silhouettes 100-400 yards.) We shoot pigs and turkey steel both at 300 yards to make 50 record round match. I took 2nd with 40/50 and my partner hit 44/50 (45-70 with Snovers and smokeless too). There was a side prize for "best team" which we took with 84/100 combine score. I guess my point here is having 5 decades with smokeless shows over my current 6 mo. experience in developing serious Black Powder rifle loads is evident. Having a foot in both worlds is not a bad thing. Using the same rifles and kit hopefully will help bring along the experiment in fuels ;-) Getting more trigger time is on the Bucket List. The people one meets in either fuel type are usually all 1st class. Aim small too I hear that helps

Seems appropriate to show preliminary testing of new rifle with smokeless here. In another thread down at BPCR reloading is saga of preparing to shoot black powder silhouette, same new rifle and such.
First it is important to thank Buddy for donation of his shoulder’s help in this Experiment. In prepping the new Black Rifle for full silhouette match some brass had to be fire formed. The Bat Cave produced 100 pieces containing just one charge but three different projecteels. Info was taken from Lyman manual # 49 page 293. There are three 40-65 load tables shown. Oddly enough we just happened to have samples of each of the three casts. My own 410655 mold and Nick’s 410660 & 410663 molds provided the PB parts. The powder selected was SR4759 from Bat Cave hoard. The amount is from the tables and will not be disclosed? Data: Chrony showed AV. Of 1186 fps for current BP load of 2f GEOX. With 410655. In smokeless batch this same 410655/418gr = 1298 fps, the 410660/395gr. = 1308 fps, the 410663/409 gr. = 1328 fps. We split the hand loads each firing about 10 rounds per shift. Approx. ½ loads were at 200yd chicken silhouette (sized duplicated on paper). We finished up at 300 yds. on fresh but same sized targets. The attached photo is one of the unlucky chicks. In full disclosure there are additional peripheral impacts. However just like the political media today we have selected those important to our purpose. The beauty of the moment was once “Center Center” was tuned in the work produced the Peppered Chicken illustrated. Of course, area residence may know there was storm front brewing and we “enjoyed” gusty winds from 4-6 oclock during experiment. Note at lower left and right there are representative groupings with differ bullets. I wish to assure you there was some luck in that the wind held velocity and direction long enough to fire each of those series. One nice thing about the “breeze” is that while partner and I switched seated this Sharp’s 74 kept on ticking and barrel did not get overly warm. Actually the recoil of this 40-65 is not that bad. But pair firing gave wonderful chance to share the phun and get expert assistance. We applied post front sight for 200 yds. Work and switched to aperture front for 300 yds. Work. The other target not shown has good testament to wind & load conditions. There was a group fired that was only about 1 inch vertical but almost 8 inch horizontal. The fish tail winds were strong enough to remove gear off bench if not held down. It was truly a blast. Thanks again to friend for enduring this contest. While hunkered down while wind sought to tear our hair off we recalled similar conditions at Quigley ’12 match? Now the work will concentrate on replicating the accuracy with all BP. It ought to be more fun as to tell the truth all 100 smokeless rounds went down range sans any fussing or bore cleaning. After 100 rounds the bore was shiny and ready for more. Alas the operators were pooped? Brazos RobertB
What I am looking for is some smokeless load suggestions.
All my other shooters are BP and other than .22RF, I haven't owned a target rifle that I've shot anything but BP in.
I have a WTB ad posted here, but I will mention that I am looking for a factory stock set off a Ruger No.1.

Day began nice enough, mid 30s, time to smelt.

Decided I would load some 45 ACP rounds for my Blackhawk since the machine was set up for that round. I was loading the H&G #34 bullet the last round so I only needed to adjust the seating depth. After about 20 rounds the press began to bind. I hate that & figured something simple but not so.

I disassembled the press fairly sure of the problem. Off came the linkage & out came the ram.
The bare frame:

The linkage:

The problem, galling of the link arm where it attaches to the frame. I have a Dillon 450 which had the same problem.

With the problem solved it was back to loading.

Now Rick, Don, Kurt Et Al. I already read all your posts on other Duplex threads so I already know your view on the subject. So.............

Showed up at work (long way from home) night before last and realized I forgot to bring my New Batch of Swiss Powder and some of my reloading supplies.

So I'm sitting around with not much to do since the weather isn't cooperative and taking stock of what I do have. A little Unique and a little old Batch of Swiss.

Got me to thinking, I've done enough reading on the subject, I just as well try out a few loads. So I made up two 3 shell batches. 85 gr Swiss and 3 gr Unique on top and 80 gr Swiss and 3 gr Unique on top. (mdeland style)

Whole purpose of my testing is to see if it alleviates the fouling control problems.

Groups were shot at 34 deg and 37 deg respectively. about 1 hr apart.
No blow tubing or wiping.

Neither batch showed any improvement over straight black. I still had to cam the second shell in pretty hard.

My missing supplies showed up yesterday so I'm back to straight black, but planning my next duplex move. switching to Unique on bottom will be the next test to see if it changes the fouling. Then switch powders and rates.

Ok folks who wants to spill their guts about running this stuff?
Shadow, Porta, Semtav, you guys payin any attention?
I loaded 20 rounds with 37 grs and a .060 wad in fireformed Remington cases, primed with Federal 215 match primers, and topped with the 527 gr money bullet from John Olsen. She ran these thru her hiwall for a few rounds then I finished the lot up.
Anyway accuracy was pretty decent at 300.
So I cleaned the gun washed the brass, and am now comtemplating the next effort to see if we can get this stuff to work for Carol and her hiwall.
Thinking next go will be 39 grs with the 645 saeco bullet, see if the recoil isn't slapping her in the cheek as much as the heavier bullet...
