Gussy I carry a metal detector also. A word of warning when in California they are liable to fine you big time picking up "artifacts." I'm a member of the Lost Dutchman's mining association and get their monthly reports and some have been fined by the forest service guys picking up junk like square nails, barbwire broken horse shoes and put it in the junk bag to carry it out when they are looking for nuggets.
